Rearsets

Hi,

I'm finding this forum REALLY useful one of the best I've ever come across on the web!

OK, rearsets. I'm thinking of putting rearsets on a Commando. I've never ridden a standard Commando, only Triumph T100's & T140's.

I'm 6'3" tall & somebody said to me the rear sets would be better for my height?

Is there any issue with the pillion when using rearsets? is there enough room? Most of my riding will be touring style.

I'd like to hear from people who went from a standard setup to rearsets & what do you think etc.

After the first long trip on my Commando, battling into a headwind at 70 mph for 250 miles, the journey was so uncomfortable with the standard footrests that I resolved to fit rearsets as soon as I could. They transformed the ride quality and I can now do long trips and cruise comfortably at motorway speeds, and they are also good around town. I adapted some old rearsets and made some of my own parts. I experimented with footrest positions and leverage ratios and eventually found the right combination of lever movement and effort for me. You can of course buy rearsets already made up, but the good ones are pricey. I have a rod actuated rear brake which I prefer, but there are some elegant cable operated rear sets (a la JP Replica) you can buy as well. I have a flip-up right footrest for the standard kickstart lever to clear, but some forum members have made very neat fold-out kickstart levers which do away with this.

Rear Sets

I fitted rear sets straight away as I could not stand the riding position with the standard footrests. My pillion has small feet but with my size 10 boots on the Dunstall pegs we clash constantly.
Have a look at the cut down set up on an earlier post. These look to be perfect.

I've shown this before, but I made a set of plates in stainless to move the passenger pegs up and rearward to keep my wife's feet away from my boot heel.

If you follow suit and use clip ons or clubmans or other low handle bars the most noticeable thing is the strain on your neck, upper spine and shoulders from the transfer of weight to these body parts. If you ride a lot you will build up muscle support in these areas and it will go away. You will become very much aware as to the weight of your helmut for the first month or so.

on the other hand:

~Your tours will be shorter (timewise)
~Your tours will be safer as you will have better control of the mc
~You will become one with your motorcycle... OM Va-a-room

RonL: Nice job on the pillion peg brackets, the photo's you posted on the other thread are really useful, thanks.

RennieK: Thanks for you feedback on the rearsets, I more than likely will not put clipons on the bike too much strain for my back

It seems that the reasets will give the Commando a more modern riding position, which allows you to be a bit more 'involved' with the bike rather than just sitting atop with you legs out forward.

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for meeting up today for a chat about all things Norton!

It was a pleasure meeting somebody who obviously uses their Norton & is passionate about improving the engineering on a bike so that it is as usable as it can be for modern road use.

Once I get sorted out with a Commando I'm sure we will meet up again & go for a spin.

Hi, Don't know if you've got the rearsets yet? There is a set going on e bay at the moment in UK. I believe they make them, so probably could do a custom pair.
