The perils of always having well maintained motorcycles but you might have to wonder how the axle is moving some three inches without drama.
Perhaps a bodger has been at work there in the past, time will tell unless it is a simple binding issue.

Been sitting in a barn since 1983...wheel off..cut it the bolt that is
 
The Speedo drive can crush and nip up tight on the axle too. Thus presenting a nice obstacle to a notched or rusted shaft.
 
OP:
To post images easily, you need to upgrade to VIP account (see the members section for how to do this). You will then have a new button on text entry screens "Attach File" which you can use to select image files or other permitted types that are on your local pc/phone etc. Drag and drop may also work.
Without VIP, you can only link to images that are hosted elsewhere, like a photo sharing site. This way there is no upload to this forum server, saving disk storage etc. A downside with linking, if the source site changes the address to the file, it will no longer be seen here.

Was there any obvious issue with your spindle that was preventing removal?

If the right side is out 3" the thread unscrewed completely , but if it's not been apart for year's then the axle can rust between the bearings and stick. Turning and pulling slowly can work. Grease the axle when reassembling so it does not happen next time.

Littlefeat. You do have us wondering what your problem could be. A broken axle [ but if it has stretched and broken, would not the diameter be reduced ] !!. If it has sheared of, has it splayed the broken end.?

Please get it apart and let us know what has caused the problem.

If you have to use a heavy slide hammer to get this apart, get help. Someone will need to hold a heavy sledge hammer against the swing arm bracket or you will bend the swing arm.

We used a very large broken truck axle with a chain attached, in order to remove hubs from some vehicles. That's brutal, but the only way some times.

Shit. How did I miss those last 2 posts.

You must have had to grind through the axle spacer to cut the axle. That's bloody brutal. With the right thinking and the right tools you can achieve lots.

The left side was loose when I brought it home, started to remove the right side..could get it about 2..inches past swing arm but never farther..ran it back in and got left side tight and back to right side out, same result...so with a aching back and a weak mind cut it off...if I knew it would be 109.00 to replace maybe not so smart...while on floor I just pulled on what was left and it came apart...while hub was on bench put left side axle bolt in and tighten remains of right side in and it tighten up..so a long explanation is it must have been hung up on something...more will be reviled.. did not cut through spacer just axle bolt

No spacer on right side when I got it..

HI Guys new to this forum
I have read all the post re rear axle removal as I am having the same issues. it just spins out on the right. I have re tightened the left chain side again( A few times now) Spinning the wheel around it seems as though something is lose inside the hub, even tried a puller on the bolt.. Any thoughts most welcomed. Cheers

I finely cut the bolt, costly bolt and removed the wheel and then was able to free up the bolt..not sure what it was hung up on..replaced most parts in brake hub ad new bolt...then more fun came putting it all back together
