rear wheel removal

MY mate and I are having trouble removing the r/wheel on his mk2 interceptor ,the axel just turns but does not come out ,I just hear a click every full turn of the axel ,any advice

I'm currently restoring a MK1 Interceptor, which has the same rear wheel set up. If the spindle is just clicking on each turn, the thread on the spindle or stub axle into which it screws is knackered. The arrangement is more or less the same as a Norton. The best way to remove the spindle would be by welding a bolt, say 3/8" UNF or similar, onto the hex end, & screwing on a slide hammer. Then just start unscrewing the spindle whilst operating the slide hammer.

Or maybe clamping on a vise grip (UK 'mole pliers? to the hex nut? I have no idea what it's terminology is) and tapping from far side, or slide-hammering somehow as you turn it? I wish I had a welder and the skills but alas, I don't, so I revert to makeshift methods. I always seem to find a way.
