Clutch adjustment on 74, 850

Been working on a basket case 74 860..basket included most of clutch parts. Amount others. Have gotten all parts 2 , 2 chains and put it back together. After much reading and work on this dilemma I have determined it would take the 6 million $$ man to put enough pressure to get it to ingage. Question one is how much is the movement..travel. a ball barring size or more. Did these blemishes on hub come from my clutch tool and would that restrict the movement.

Could you give a bit more detail as I'm not sure what you mean by "get it to ingage [engage]"? If you mean 'lift' then that's disengaged.
If the clutch lever is extremely difficult to pull to the handlebar then the actuator in the lift mechanism could have dropped out of position?

Question one is how much is the movement..travel. a ball barring size or more.

At the clutch actuator/pushrod/diaphragm spring/handlebar lever? Which "ball bearing size"?

No, those indentations are the result of wear caused by the friction plates.
That clutch centre needs replacing.

Not normal. That Clutch center is pooched.
You need one of these.

 
If you are running a Barnett clutch the is a maximum stack height. If it is thicker then normal the clutch lever is extremely hard to pull. Adjust per Norton manual, if still hard ck out Barnett web sight.

The lower the stack height the harder the clutch pull becomes.


Assuming the correct parts are fitted (for the 850 5-friction plate clutch) then the Barnett plates are approximately the same thickness as standard plates.

 
My vote is on the clutch actuator being out of position (located behind the access cover on the right side of the gearbox).
