I have disassembled the rear wheel and brake drum on my 1971 commando, to include replacing the bearings and cush bumpers.

when I try and install the wheel on the brake drum the bearing spacer on the brake drum stops the wheel from going in all the way. it bumps up against the bearing spacer in the wheel hub.

bearing spacer # 23 fits in the double bearing on the brake drum

inner spacer # 29

What am I missing

looks like you have the long bearing spacer in the hub wrong way around , the longest shoulder goes to the right side , speedo drive

Wheel on, that worked, but my Clymer manual is specific about the long end of the shaft going to the left, brake side. ???

Clymer:
"On 1970 and earlier models, the distance between the end of the spacer and the shoulder is greater on the left (brake) side than on the right to accommodate the wider double-row bearing in the left side of the hub"...etc.

Yours is a 1971 model. However, it could have been explained better.

Key word; "Clymer". Granted, you have to assume all assembly drawings were create by Picasso, but, if you squint really tightly at item #29 at http://www.oldbritts.com/1971_g16.html, you can make out that the long end does indeed rest in the speedo drive side.
I shouldn't point fingers at any one publication; after all, the FSM tells us to tighten our clutch hub nut to 80 ft/lbs, when we all know it shouldn't be over 40 ft/lbs.
