what use is the box level plug when the box has been tilted well forward ? What do others do?, The mainshaft and bearings are in a higher than std position so in theory we should increase the oil volume and hope it does not leak out of unexpected places ?. At least the change springs wont go rusty.

Won't the gearbox splash lube adequately, even when tilted over? I just put 1 pint of gear lube in mine, as per the Haynes manual, though admittedly that manual covers primarily Atlas and other Norton non-Commando street twins.

What he said with different words. I fill my gearbox to within 3/8 inch of that level plug. The gear lube is not sitting still in the gearbox once underway. It gets thrown on everything in the box. My gearbox is almost fully forward within 1/16th" of the oil line tubes coming off the back of the timing side case.

You could fill it to the bottom of the level plug and not suffer leakage as long as the gearbox was rebuilt recently, or you're really lucky with a 50 year old gearbox never wearing out seals.

On my commando I found quite a level change from on the centre stand to on its wheels , the oil froths up a fair bit , so should lube and should find its own level if it leaks ! .

Doesn't appear to be precise science, Chiltons manual shows the Commando box capacity as larger than the Atlas, yet Roy Bacon has it vice versa....
To quote Mick Hemmings on the Commando box (Classic Bike, Oct 2009): 'Don't overfill.... cover the kickstart shaft and no more'

I think cover the shaft and no more is a good compromise . that will leave the level far short of the plug which must have confused owners in the past. The outside of this box is well oily so new seals soon on this P11A Ranger.

Factory manual shows 1.2 pints for P11 and G85 while Commando is 0.9 pints.
