Tediously smooth the finish then have shot pinged then cryo tempered for extra bullet proofing. Next level up would be single crystal grown mass later machined to size. Then the cases and pistons or rods may let go first.

I think Winberg wins in the too pretty to use crankshaft competition. Jim

i've put that image over my naked women posters to get off on better longer.

Back in the 70s a friend was building a fast 750 Triumph and we bought one od Dave Nourish's shafts. It didn't look flash and was very simply made, and it is still being used in historic races today. At one time another friend owned the bike (a Triton). The only Triumph part on it was the cylinder head casting. He won several Australian Historic Championships with the bike. However he once said to me 'I can't beat the Nortons'.

Which takes precedence testosterone or adrenaline ? One day you might have to choose. Personally I prefer a nice glass of Shiraz.

will it flex?

It will not flex as much as a Stock crank because there is more counterweight on the outside cheeks. You can see that the wing tips of the outer cheeks extend closer to the centerline of the crank. The outer cheeks are also a little thicker than stock 750/850 Mk2 cheeks. This means that you can reduce the counterweight at the center of the crank and so reduce the flex.

Hi Jim, now the big question.....could we hope to see those cranks on sale one day ??

Allow me, Jim. They are available now. A mere $1900.

Oh oh, what I have I done? Am I in trouble?

That is bloody good value, what does the crank weigh and what balance factor can be achieved without weakening it ? I currently use 72% without drilling too many holes in the standard 850 crank.

Since 72% is more than the std commando crank BF,
you'd be adding mallory metal inserts to the heavy side.
It would be difficult to weaken a crank doing that, unless the drillee was seriously ham fisted ?

Although I think it's reasonably priced, would you send a receipt that I can show my GF with the decimal place moved to the left??

With the standard 850 crank, filling the hole in the bob-weight with a steel plug gets you almost to 72%. I drilled the other side of the flywheel a bit, however decided it was not the way to go. I wanted a BF of 75%. If the billet crank is much lighter and cannot be balanced to a fairly high factor, it is not what I want. A light crank is not necessarily an improvement if you cannot rev the motor higher without other things giving up. I've ridden Triumph 650 Saints which have a much lighter crank, they don't perform as well as the earlier Bonneville, even allowing for the difference in number of carburettors.

It says somewhere in the intro to this thread that this crank weight is 23 (lbs ?).
Reading what is wrote may save a lot of angst...

Jim , which model cases are these crank designed for, will they fit Mk 3 cases?
Regards Mike

As with other cranks, shims are used to make the inner races fit Mk3 cases with correct end play.

Same weight as stock approx 23 lbs.
