I tried a search, but still a little confused - besides, any and all photoshop pics are out of focus. so my question - is this an original Mk2 muffler?

any other identifying characteristics? TIA....

They could possibly be original because of the way the screw boss's are brazed on to the wall of the silencer. Later versions had a plate between the two elements to strengthen the mounting. When these bikes were two or three years old that was a common failure point.

I may by wrong but I think all the original ones had the weld ground off where the reverse cone is welded on

Not all. Some were seamless (S type) and some were not.
Some had the Norton logo....others didn't. Edit: However, According to Joe Seifert (ZFD) in a previous post, the Norton logo was stamped on later replacement peashooters.

hard to tell, but it kind of looks like a somewhat smooth transaction into the reverse cone - https://get.google.com/albumarchive...k&authKey=CPnx5abjo4XU5AE#5778264570636546482 , so that sounds like it may be a keypoint. my outlet seems a bit smaller than, what i'm assuming LAB posted as an original peashooter...

just curious as to what I have - if not OE, may sell them, and if OE, keep them as part of the bike. right now, it came with new (repro) dunstall mufflers, and I purchased new header pipes (without crossover-balance tube). getting close on installing the exhaust - have several options at this point. I have the same issue with the header pipes - OE/non-OE - ???

one additional detail -

these mufflers have a series of fins or louvers within the internals. three sets 120° apart. they run from approximately the muffler mounts to the (near) outlet - not the best pic, but you get the idea...

Original Mk2 muffs had welded mutes in the outlet. I’ve never seen a replacement. I’m guessing those ore OE.
Further more. The Mk1 had removable mutes with a set screw that always rattled out but left a little hole on the inside of the outlet.
The silencers we see nowadays are actually 750 style.

Good point Maylar. I’m looking on my phone, can’t see them real well. Looking. Again they are pretty nasty.
But I will throw this out, does anyone remember any aftermarket silencers with the welded mutes?

so, what we have, or what I have, is mufflers with ugly welds, not up to what's perceived as factory standards, but welded mutes not typically seen on aftermarket or repro mufflers. from the replys, i'm reading this as, "maybe they are, maybe they're not". the outlet diameter appears close to the 1.25" original dimension, and the internal fins, louvers, or whatever they're called, and from what i'm reading, is an internal feature of original peashooters. just got ugly welds. still unsure and somewhat confused. one thing for sure - previous owners seemed to have save every nut and bolt associated with this bike, including these mufflers. original or not, i'm leaning toward installing these back on the bike. again, thanks for the input and feedback - ;)

I have an original muted pea shooter around somewhere I could dig out

I did, back in the 80's. Don't remember the make - Emgo or Dommie Racer probably. They were restrictive and quiet - I took a hole saw to them and opened them up. Much better.

the welded or brazed end of your originals look very similar to mine. my exit diameter is 1.0 inches whereas yours appears to be slightly smaller yet. still can't say without a doubt if mine are originals or not, but i'm leaning in that direction. my 74 was pretty much a survivor when I got it. it was a somewhat an abandon project - half apart, not running, but with few exceptions (major items - tires, battery, tool kit, handlebars, and rear grab bar), all the parts were there - down to the nut and bolt level. overall, it was original - even the paint, so I have no reason to doubt the originality of mufflers. problem is, I can find no identifying marks that point back to original equipment - only speculation.
