Hi all, I had a little wreck the other day with minor damage to my Norton interstate which included a bent interstate muffler. It bent the bracket but also the pipe itself where it bolts up. The 1st image shows the undamaged side. The damage is shown in the next 2. Can this muffler be repaired? Does anyone know where I can purchase these? Thanks in advance. Randy

The mounting brackets you have are not all the correct parts for Interstate silencers/mufflers.

The inner bracket plates (assuming LH and unseen RH are the same?) you have are for mounting peashooters.

The two Interstate inner brackets should be...

...The triangular muffler brackets (yours are possibly correct?) are either two of these...

...or one of the above on the left-hand side and cranked bracket...
...on the right-hand side. This was a later factory modification to provide more kickstart lever clearance.

The triangular muffler brackets are attached to the inner brackets by both rubber mounts.

The diamond-shaped brackets...

...are also peashooter muffler plates so they shouldn't be there at all.

Another approach to repair might be using a slide hammer on the mounting bosses, alternating back and forth between the two to get an even pull. You will have to experiment with the forces, starting with lighter bumps. Holding the muffler while you use the slide hammer might be a bit tricky, just stay away from any hard surfaces with sharp corners. A friend with two strong arms would probably be your ideal work holding device.

Old thread, I know but I thought I should throw out a note of caution in case it isn't obvious regarding interstate silencers: That being that it's awfully easy to ground either side with exuberant riding. On a particularly hard right turn I was over as far as I could go with the silencer making sparks enough to set the woods on fire and still drifting into the oncoming lane. Only much hanging off saved the day and I still ended up in the oncoming lane rather than over the bank into the creek. Seconds later a motor home appeared in said lane but I was able to get back on my side in the nick. The silencer was badly scraped up and rather than replace it I went back to the up-swept pipes with pea shooters. There's still enough room for my soft panniers.
