I am finally putting the Norton back together and I have a few questions about the oil system routing:

Using the parts manual, Group 16
1. Does part 46 join part 45 and part 44?
2. Does part 47 connect to anything except the oil tank?
3. Part 17, according to Old Britts, is 12 inches..as I have it connected 12 inches seems about two inches too short. Have I routed it incorrectly?
4. Where is part 23 attached to the bike, or is it?

Thanks so much for the help!

Bill

1. yes
2. Tank vent I shove mine down between the motor and gearbox.
3. 12" seems short or maybe the pipe has been trimmed on the junction block.
4. I believe it attaches to the Z plate some where. I don't have one but it was recently discussed.

You need to be very careful here as some of the parts books are unclear which pipe goes where.

The oil feed pipe is the outside one and goes from the oil tank filter stub to the outside oil junction pipe on the motor.

The return goes from the inside oil junction pipe to the oil filter mounting head (if you have an oil filter) and then pt. 17 goes from the other port on the oil filter mounting head to the return pipe on to the rear of the oil tank. If you have no oil filter then the above is just one return pipe.
Dunno how far you've got with reassembly, but removing the rear mudguard (fender) and that damned horn will make attaching the oil system much easier.

2.. Part 47 is the oil tank/engine breather hose. It connects to a hose fitting on the back of the rear air filter plate. However, most people route the hose somewhere else.

3. There are two Part 17 hoses. One is from the engine oil return to the oil filter inlet. The other one is from the oil filter outlet to the oil tank return. The one from the engine return outlet to the oil filter pretty much makes a direct run that travels between the gearbox and the gearbox cradle. There is also a protection spring that slips over the hose to prevent the hose from chafing between the gearbox and the cradle. The other oil return hose has a protection spring on it as well. Also that hose does a dramatic bend where connected to the oil tank because the horn is in such close proximity. If the hose appears to be too short, just get a longer hose.

4. Part 23 is the oil hose clip. It mounts under the nut of the lower 3/8 diameter Z-plate bolt. The parts book is kind of funny looking and shows both hoses captured by that clip. However, with an oil filter arrangement it only supports the oil feed hose.

IIRC, high school biology charts showed fresh blood as red, return to the heart as blue. Just the opposite with the Norton oil plumbing diagram. Blue being cool oil, from tank to engine, red being the hot oil return path to the tank.

Because my motor wet-sumps badly, I usually disconnect the feed pipe and stuff a bolt up it and retighten the clamp. Recently when I replaced the gearbox, I disconnected both lines and drained the tank. . I looked at it the other day and hoped that I'd reconnected them in the correct positions. It would be a disaster to get them wrong and not notice. Thanks to the guy above who reaffirmed what I should never have forgotten.

Just to add, the XS reed valve makes an excellent replace for number 46.
