ok so i finaly got the jug off and the pistons are chip on the back on both pistons 2 questions i have
One should i replace ?
Second why ?
not sure if i did it

and the outside is looking alot worse the the inside thank god for that this is my kinda basket case

Wether you did it or not, those pistons should not be chipped. I would tear down and see where the "chipped off" pieces are. Reguardless though, those pistons will need replaced. I would check the inside of the cylinder barrel ... for any scoring as well. Good luck !

You are very luck, indeed.

+1 on nortriubuell's advice.

My $.02: Find out why the pistons chipped in the first place, or it will happen again.

If you can fish the pieces out and they have not run through the mill at all that would solve the “who done it”. It's pretty hard to do this to a motor that was running easy to do it to a bike with loose jugs and stuck pistons. That is a clean motor almost too clean I would be looking for the mistakes of a novice builder that kept it from getting properly dirty inside, every picture tells a story you know.

Even if those pistons WERE'NT chipped, I'd replace them. Those oiling cut-outs look like a disaster waiting to happen. never did like that style of pistons.

so these pistons are not a good set anyway ?
here's a another ? wheres a good place to get new pistons and rings and i wish i could afford a JS set but a grand is just waayyyyyyy out of range for me

I forget when Norton stopped using slotted pistons, but take the bottom ring out and see if there is a slot that goes all the way from one of the vertical slots all the way over to the other one. If so, get rid of them, get rid of them anyhow, they are damaged. You can get a good price for pistons from RGM and Norvil. I got mine from Norvil, about £130 = about $200 including rings. They are a bit heavier than the originals, but not priced like the light weight ones and don't need new con rods. You will find you can get lots of stuff from UK much cheaper that stateside, sorry to say. I have had things delivered from RGM in 3 days sometimes. Hemmings, Burton Bits are a good source too.
