I was talking with a friend about dual sport bikes... And my twisted brain starts running...

Anybody ever see a commando built with dirtbike stuff up tall, light and nimble?

Norton motocrossers aren't completely unheard of. There is one brought down with the VME crowd to Chehalis, Wa. (The Farm) each year. Now I wouldn't go so far as to say "light"... I don't have the picture handy. Sorry.

If you do a Google images search using 'Norton P11 you will see some Norton dirt bikes, including a beautiful example built for Motocross racing. I know it's not a Commando, but the frame is similar enough that you could certainly do a nice MX based street bike.

The MRD Metisse frames for Triumphs fit Norton engines with different engine plates. I saw a couple of these frames yesterday in Perth, Western Australia at British Imports. He has the engine plates for Nortons.

I saw one of those Wasps at the Bonneville salt flats; didn't manage to follow up and see if he set his record. Really cool guy, he & the bike were rather scruffy...

Cool stuff! THANKS!

NotoMoto???

I wonder if those old dirtbike pieces in the corner of the used parts room would fit... Hmmm???

Nortons did of course make the cosmetic exercise "SS" model for 1971.

non-traditional commando build

(The brochure is too large for my scanner).

The isolastic frame is what makes the Commando different from any other Norton and I don't really see it as the most suitable off-road frame - every time that you jump, you're transferring all that load through the three rear engine mounting studs.

My Dad claims to have made a few hill climbs on his stock 75. No pictures though

I don't think I'll be jumping it (not all that much anyway). More like a dual sport, going to be able to go down that dirt road, maybe that trail... Oh, there is a creek crossing... and then the tree limb across the path... etc... You know, expand the places to explore since it will have more ground clearance and dual sport tires.

Of course there will be the shock factor to some of the purists...
