Sorry about the dumb question but I've only had the '73 850 Commando a week so still working my way around it.

I took the seat off and looked in the side cover to see if there was a tool kit in it but alas it was empty. I definitely need to get some tools pronto.

That is not my question though. How do I remove the side cover. It has two grommets/plastic pins holding it at the rear end but not sure how it releases and I do not want to break anything. The cover is fibreglass by the feel of it.

Once again sorry about the dumb question.

Thanks

Frank

Assuming this is still stock, the left side cover has what is called a dzus fastener at the front of it - follow the little metal strip up high at the front - and there is a metal clip there that does a half twist to undo it / do it back up.

Worth commenting that the tools usually jumped out of that 'tool holder pocket'.
And the dzus often undid itself, and the sidecover jumped off the bike at speed.
Worth wiring it or using a plastic zip-tie to make sure it stays there.

& Welcome here.
Hope to hear more of you enjoying your 850.

Thanks for the answer and for the link to the Manual it is much appreciated.

If the dzuz fitting is not there due to p.o. repair, replacements are available. This way you don't need tools to get to your tools. It's worth having a few tools, spare plugs, electric wire, connectors, duct tape, fuses, a master link, etc. on board but use a tool bag to keep them from falling out. Spare cables can be carried in the headlight shell. The only things that break are the things you don't have the spare or tool for (Murphy's law).
