OK Matt, thanks, it's hard to tell from the pics. i'll have to take a look at how close my pipes are to the split line.

I hope someone will post basic installation instructions just to see what all is involved. Jim

1. Remove clutch, alternator, primary drive and primary case.

2. Install new bits, existing alternator & clutch stack, and connect wires.

3. Vrrom, vroom!

(maybe 1 or 2 additional steps in between)

I don't think there is any modification or fabrication, just bolt-on and wire up.

Just looking at it, I'd guess a morning or afternoon's work...

Jim

We are going to do a install video

We have installed 4 of these so far. The last bike took 90 minutes to do. Of course we had experience with the system and all the tools prepared We think a decent mechanic could do this in about 3 to 5 hours. Paul was right, it is all bolt on stuff. Tank has to be pulled to wire up the starter switch on the handlebar, and a small relay has to be installed behind the battery

any plans to offer an over drive ratio as IMHO it is a far better way to go than the stock ratio. it sure makes life on the gear box a lot easer.

Bill,

Close to the stock chain drive 2.19 ratio (26/57)

cNw front sprocket is a 32 and the clutch basket is a 70. That's a 2.188 ratio

Bill,

Possibly. However we are somewhat restricted to sizes of the sprockets we can use in this design and that has a big impact of course. The sizes we are using are also ultimately dictating the gear sizes and if we start changing any sprocket sizes, it may affect the efficiency of what we have in this original design. If this then leads to having to make different sets of gears, then it won't happen as this is really a major expense

how much does this setup foul the original ham can? If / when I go this route I'd like to make up a filter arrangement that looks like stock and still keeps the key where it's at. Would be fairly to do I suspect. Hardest part would be finding a filter element to fit.

I don't care for the looks of the KN pod fitted to stock Amals.

If you measure from the split line of the inner and outer primary, straight up, you will need just under 4" of clearance for the starter

Also the K&N's we will be using are similar in shape to the one I use one the Keihins. In other words, it's not a huge oval but rather 2 individual, cone shaped filters. Really pretty clean and out of sight when mounted

You can see them here (somewhat) http://coloradonortonworks.com/part-cat ... /#post-279

Hi all,

Just a quick update to let you know that we are in production making all the CNC machined parts. John at STS is making time available in his amazing CNC mills and the process is well under way. We are running a bit past our original completion date but felt that we wanted to take some extra time to run the systems in our test machines down in Florida to ensure that everything is just right

Couple of images from the production. Clutch baskets are all cut to size ready for the first operation. Inner primaries ready to go. Once the billet parts are completed, they will all ship to Colorado for finish work and assembly of the kits

It's a good thing we didnt plan on doing any test riding here in Colorado. Recent view from the shop window. I have yet to source studded snow tires for the Commandos........

Does the "ham can" air filter backing plate have to be removed to install this kit?

Some notes on testing the new CNW e-start.

We have tested the system on 2 bikes (a 1973 Interstate and CNW Build 119) We have run tests for belt and starter system operations.

So far we have about 4,000 miles on the belt, and over 1500 starts on the starter.

The belt conversion has been abused with hard acceleration and downshifting engine braking torque. The belts in both bikes look great, and we have seen no need for a break-in readjustment of the belt.

The starter has performed very good through a variety of tests. After 1200 starts the system was disassembled for inspection. All components showed no wear. We were especially concerned with the drive sprocket and starter gear, which make up the sprag assembly. These are made of S7 tool steel and hardened to 60 Rockwell C. The sprag contact areas on both components looked great, no signs of wear or dimpling from the sprag engagement. The two components are assembled with deep groove, sealed bearings, capturing the sprag between the bearings, and sealed in its own grease pack. The sprag assembly is then mounted directly to the crank taper.

We are making an initial run of 50 units for Matt. We are also running an additional 50 clutch baskets to be used with the new belt drive conversion that will be offered by Matt (pending design of the new front dedicated belt drive sprocket, which will be aluminum like the clutch basket)

Thanks for your patience

John

Lazyeye,

The stock air box itself wont fit but we have made sure there is enough clearance between the backing plate that is mounted to the battery tray, and the starter.

So, No....you do not have to remove the backing plate

Hi Matt!

I just read on your homepage that you chose a Gates Carbon GT belt. Excellent choice, congrats on that! I've been using this belt in some test benches, they're much better than any other available type.

Tim,

Appreciate the feedback. I know you do have high standards and it's good to hear that you like how the belt performs

Quick update on the e-start kit.

STS is completing the first batch of billet parts and they will be crated at the end of this week, heading to Colorado. Once at the shop we will start the final prep and finish of thos parts. Then the kits will be completed with all that is included, boxed up and ready to ship

Updates on the site as well http://coloradonortonworks.com/part-cat ... #post-1214

Below are some production shots. The first run is 50 units total but some parts are made in higher quantities to make sense out of the stock that was purchased
