Some notes on testing the new CNW e-start.
We have tested the system on 2 bikes (a 1973 Interstate and CNW Build 119) We have run tests for belt and starter system operations.
So far we have about 4,000 miles on the belt, and over 1500 starts on the starter.
The belt conversion has been abused with hard acceleration and downshifting engine braking torque. The belts in both bikes look great, and we have seen no need for a break-in readjustment of the belt.
The starter has performed very good through a variety of tests. After 1200 starts the system was disassembled for inspection. All components showed no wear. We were especially concerned with the drive sprocket and starter gear, which make up the sprag assembly. These are made of S7 tool steel and hardened to 60 Rockwell C. The sprag contact areas on both components looked great, no signs of wear or dimpling from the sprag engagement. The two components are assembled with deep groove, sealed bearings, capturing the sprag between the bearings, and sealed in its own grease pack. The sprag assembly is then mounted directly to the crank taper.
We are making an initial run of 50 units for Matt. We are also running an additional 50 clutch baskets to be used with the new belt drive conversion that will be offered by Matt (pending design of the new front dedicated belt drive sprocket, which will be aluminum like the clutch basket)
