My What Am I Getting Myself Into Combat Build Thread

Yea no thanks, I would rather have a new gears, case and shafts as it's all apart anyways. I had the money and there was no way I would even try to salvage the case, it was bad. But I can say it's amazing that it was still staying together and it had been that long and that many miles on it since I purchased it. I guess because I don't ride it hard is why it stayed together, But it did teach me a good lesson, don't ever trust someone that says it's been rebuilt and gone through. And matching numbers don't matter to me as safety is much more important to me. Just my thoughts. Chuck.

I guess i'll replace that set, thanks. A couple of the others show some wear, but not as pitted as the 2nd gear set.

Next question, It's recommended that the entire gear set be replaced, but what about the selector fork? The fork for this set has a little wear, but it doesn't look that bad (to me)

I think the shifting forks look fine, I would change the gears in pairs. My old gears make those look almost new, if the others look better you should be ok. In fact if you don't ride it hard those would last awhile longer, just keep an eye on them and change out bearings and bushings.

That's my thinking. Probably won't be ridden much (yes, a personal problem). Plan to tear down again in another 15k for a looksey (if i ever get there in my lifetime :p)

So while i'm waiting on GB parts, thought i'd tackle the rear wheel, but stuck trying to get the speedo lockring off.

Using the factory peg spanner, i tried first wrenching it CCW. No go. Then tried some soft blows with a hammer CCW (not super hard thinking it might be a LH thread). Sure enough it turns out it's a LH thread. So knowing that, i proceeded to whack it pretty hard CW. Ended up breaking my factory peg spanner

I then heated it up with some propane and whacked it again with a punch. All that did was deform the lockring indents.

Any suggestions. Could this in fact be a right hand thread?

So the direction is confirmed, thanks. Now any recommendations on removal? I could not find anywhere anyone running into this problem

You might as well use a brass drift on it now, a replacement part is under $25.
There is the option of replacing the wheel bearings with 2RS sealed units while there.

Heat, penetrating fluid and go carefully with drifts or you could end up stripping the hub thread if it has reached a point where it has become stuck.

Ok, putting that problem on the back burner and getting back on the gearbox.

Should i fit the bearing race on the layshaft (outside of the gearbox as shown, but with the gears), or put the bearing race in the bearing (installed in the gearbox) and then fit the layshaft. I would think the former.

Is there anything on this bike that's not a PITA. Steering bearings o_O. Could not "punch" out the bearing from the inside, so ended up grinding down the inner and outer bearing race so i could get enough bearings out to pop out the inner race so i could get the inner tube out in order to get a bearing puller in, but it was too stuck to pull so i ended up pushing the bearing puller from the other side. My lord!

Yeah, normally i'd use heat but didn't want to strip the paint. Anywho, was able to get them both out, it was just a pain.

Now, i think i've got everything disassembled except for the crankcase. Will save that for warmer weather (do all my parts cleaning outside)
