My What Am I Getting Myself Into Combat Build Thread

If there was someone local i would have done it, but I don't think it should be a problem.

Anyway, on to the case. Assembled the case to check end play. A little loose, but w/i tolerance (and since Old Brits is shut down, where can one find the proper shims anyways)

So, went to do final assembly with the cam and it wouldn't fit in the new timing side bush. Weird III, it the cam fit in bush before the bush was pushed in the case. Guess the case squished it enough so it wouldn't fit. Not having any maching capability, i honed it with sandpaper covered socket in a drill press. That seemed to do the trick.

And finally sealed the case

Looking forward to seeing your timing side mounted alternator mod…;)
Good eye. I installed the crankshaft both ways just to see if there was any alignment problems when i flipped the crank halves. Not a precision check for sure, but both ways seem to fit and rotate without any issues. I just happened to check the end play with the drive on the timing side (i didn't even realize that's the picture i took LOL). More, funner problems to follow....

Probably already mentioned somewhere, but who's pistons and rods and what size is the bore?

Pistons are Gibtec and rods are Carrillo. Both sourced from J. Schmidt as a set. Bore is stock (73mm)

Pistons have a small skirt

That’s gonna be a sweet motor!

Are you keeping it Combatized, with the 2S cam and bumped compression... Or castrating the poor thing as seems all the rage these days ?

Stock. I did use yamabond on the cylinder base tho (no gasket) and 40 thou copper head gasket. I don't recall any base gasket (or sealant) when i pulled it apart. Based on the main bearings i found and scratches in the crankcase, i think it's been split before so i can't say for sure what it left the factory with (IRT base gasket)

Stock?
Stock as in keeping the stock Combat cam (2S)… or fitting a ‘stock‘ Commando cam ?

2S cam. Anything else is not stock for that engine

The pistons and rods are not stock, but i don't believe they change the CR. Valvetrain is new OEM

Cool!

I have run JS pistons and rods in two engines and I think they’re great!

You have very light ones at 73mm. The light pistons and longer rods will support a more revvy motor in my experience, so the set up should really compliment the Comabt motor.

It’ll definitely be more hot-rod than tourer or cruiser.

I reckon you‘re gonna love it !!

Thanks Tom.

I wasn't sure if the pistons and rods were MAP or JSM kit parts.

Looking forward to what you think once you have it running.

The 2S is very fond of head work, larger carburetors, and a free flowing exhaust in case you are curious about it. The 2S is a good one, and according to Jim a hot cam.

I'm going to replace my 2S with a JS2. And I really hope I'm not going to miss that 2S rush.

Yeah, the JS cam has a nicer (flatter) profile, but i believe you need to use BSA lifters which necessitates his lifter blocks and push rods. The BSA lifters are a lot lighter so it's a nice package, but $$$$ when you include the cam, lifter blocks, and push rods. I decided the lightweight pistons were enough for this build. Full tilt would be also going with a lightweight valve train. But why stop there, get the Full Auto head with the larger valves ;)

I do have all those parts for the build except the FA head. I'm getting older every minute. Might as well spend it while I'm still breathing.
