the pipes and mufflers from this bike have been off and hanging since i started working on it. headers are stock with the balance pipe and the mufflers are the aftermarket dunstall. The problem is i have no nuts or bolts to hang the mufflers to the muffler bracket. It also seems to me there has to be spacers to keep the muffler out from the nut on the rubber isolater? Does anyone have any info or pictures to lead me in the right direction?

one other insignificant question, the right turn signals flash faster than the left? would that be just a poor ground connection somewhere?

Total co-incidence but for what it's worth I saw an 850 on Saturday with the Dunstall reps but did not meet the rider. He had used just the rear hole on the oval mount plate (not Mk3 mount) to fix the silencer. Couldn't really see what was attached to the silencer, maybe a captive nut in what looked like a 3" semi open welded box section. I'm not familiar with these but was thinking about them for my bike.

keith, I have originall Dunstalls on my MKIII. The box section is normal and will mount to the stock MKIII exhaust mounting plates.

To the original poster, places like Old Brits, Walridge, BCS ect. will all stock the mount plates, hardware and spacers so no need to worry. You can even get them in stainless steel from places like Rocky Point Cycle.

any idea on the turn signals?

You can get original or aftermarket Lucas style signals anywhere that sells Norton parts or there are always a lot on ebay. Hell, I'm putting new, small ones on my MKIII and I'll not be using the originals. That won't be happening until winter when the bike comes completely apart.

If as you say they flash faster one side than the other, then I suspect there is a higher resistance somewhere in the slow side flasher circuit?

This could be anywhere the from the handlebar switch and either flasher earth/ground connection. The same feed wire from the flasher relay powers both L & R circuits, so if there is a difference in operation between left and right signals then it will be after the flasher switch, or it could be the switch contacts?

Lucas, in their infinite wisdom, engineered the flasher housings so that the ground current from the bulb has to use the metallised chrome coating of the housing as a ground pathway to the flasher stem, as you may notice there probably isn't any ground wire connected to the bulb holder, so connecting a short length of wire between the bulb holder and the stem to housing retaining nut inside each housing could improve the flasher operation.

Also check that the bulbs are the same wattage (21Wx2 +2W ), as the old type electromechanical flasher relay's flash speed can be affected if the wrong wattage bulbs are used, as I believe 23W bulbs are also common in the US, and some 21W types also have a different internal resistance that could affect the flash rate? Electronic relays aren't affected as badly by this as the older electromechanical ones.

that good that you pointed that out. i was replacing the headlight and the pilot light was hanging down bouncing on the fender turning on and off. just out of curiousity i dragged it all the way around the chrome coating of the flasher and was surprised it was still lighting up. Gotta remember this whole positive ground thing, it made me think of a magic trick or something!!
