Motocross style kickstart... any good...?

Gadge, the Norvil (as in Les Emery, not the factory’s term for their racers) use the design whereby the gear lever wraps around the kickstart.

Many, many of these kits, from various suppliers, have been sold and most folk seem happy with them, so on the whole, they do work.

I had the Norvil ones for a while and thought they were well made for the price.

However, IMHO however you look at this design, it’s a compromise. You either compromise the kick start position, or gear lever position, or a bit of both. Eventually I got tired of the compromising and changed mine.

I do not believe the moto cross style kickstart will work with Norvil rearsets as the wrap around gear lever won’t allow it to fold away.

Your best bet is the stock kickstart, or stock mk3 one, and a bit of time spent juggling things around to find the best compromise. Don’t be frightened to tweak the gear lever a bit either if it helps.

The NYC rearsets work with the RGM kicker. They move the footrest further back and out the way.

When and if you acquire one and try it you may get the feel for it, never having tried to start an 11:1 big twin ,I would be inclined to speak to Steve and see what he thinks about the kickstart if your worried about doing some damage. You're the top end of fifty now Nigel not a youngster, Llf

Thanks guys, helpful advice. I did look at the more exotic options but am trying to get the bike on the road after an 18 year rest. When I get some miles in I'll see how I get on with the Norvil ones.

Thought they'd be the easy option but have already had to do some fettling to get them right including rose mounting the linkage. When I get chance I'll post some pics.
