I have searched and come up with several possibilities. This is a pic of my oil filter adapter on a 1974 850. Does anyone know which filter I need?
thanks

I use HIFLO 153's on mine, they are already painted black and some models of Ducati's use them.
They cost between $17 and $21 NZD so tha is about $15 and $19 USD Hope that helps. Don't have a pic though
Regards Mike

the thread is 16mm x 1.5mm which is a fine ISO metric. Depends where you live, but this filter thread is not super common, pretty much suit only Norton Commando these days, was used on some French Simca cars, and he, they are on every street corner, right?
I decided to use a GM size filter, as used on Gen 111 V8 engines for yonks. The filter and the oring dimensions are close enough to fit nicely, I used a 16 x 1.5mm tap to thread a blank piece of alloy bar, then thread cut the male thread, 3/4 UNF from memory in a lathe. Now I can go to the local auto parts place and buy the filter for $11
if you have a lathe or a friend with one, this is an easy mod.

Cheers Rich

Probably too simple- original part#06-3371, costs all of 4.99Pounds +VAT from Andover Norton.

What isn't so simple is that many owners do not live in the UK, or have a local Andover Norton parts supplier.

For my Mk3 I use a Harley filter from my local HD dealer. Fits and works well. Harley Davidson part #63810-80A - suggested retail price $6.95.

Now when you say adapter, do you mean you have changed the threads with an adapter kit or is this the stock thread Norton filter adapter?

Don't do this. Not worth it. Filters are readily available.

"readily available"? Not around here. You have to order them (the only cars they fit are old Renaults, which haven't been sold in this country for decades), and the cost is about double compared to the standard Chevy filters you can use with the adapter, which are available everywhere, in stock, no ordering required.

Ducati dealers stock filters that will fit. I think the last time I bought one it cost $20. If you feel like mail ordering, you can buy a HiFloFiltro filter for $9 (plus shipping). Or you can order the Andover Norton filter from your favorite Norton parts dealer. I see the current price at Old Britts is $12.77 (plus shipping).

Lower cost, in stock everywhere, wide selection - what's not to like? :?

Everyone has their favorites. I get the NAPA 1352 here:

http://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/wix-o ... 51352.html

Sometimes they are white - sometimes blue. I was getting them 6 at a time --- forgot I had some way back on the shelf, and got 6 more -- so I have probably a lifetime supply. I put the Norton filter setup on my late Matchless too so I have 2 bikes using these. You can order them through your local NAPA store too.

I found the Walridge-spot in the swap meet at Barbers a few years ago and he had a bunch of real filters so I bought them all, they were cheap(ish).

You didn't read my link, did you?

I've been to to pretty remote places and they still had a NAPA store. Just walk in and ask for a Harley filter not a Renault. Hell, any Bubba knows what a Hawg is...

I still think the adaptor is a bad idea, one more part to potentially fail.

I did read it, but I guess the part about the Harley filters didn't sink in. Besides, I don't know if I want to put any more Harley parts on my Nortons. I already have Harley brake rotors. What next, apehangers?

I'm running custom oil filter heads made by a local machine shop. Alloy body, barbed hose fittings, and they take the Chevy filters without an adapter. No leaks and the hoses don't blow off!

But I don't see a problem with the adapters. You just install it with some loctite and it's not going anywhere. Anybody with a lathe can make one in a few minutes.

Hi all , i posted a few back that the HiFlo filter that Debby listed is readily available where I live, (New Zealand) it is not listed as being "for Norton use', in fact is listed in the shops for use on Ducatis. Works a treat, relatively cheap (can't imagine a huge shipping cost)and painted black, buy them several at a time, change them everytime the oil gets changed(often) using Penrite HPR 40 (25W70), same as I use in the chain case until belt drive upgrade!!
regards Mike

I have the Colorado Norton Works threaded oil filter "adaptor" allowing for many more fitter choices.

I put it on with blue locktight. I don't see it could unthread without my putting a vice grip on it.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't see this as a part that can "fail". How would it fail anyway?
