My acquaintance with a MK3 is reporting his first effort to remove the oil filter is not having a good time. Im trying to help him remotely.
Hes got a decent filter wrench, heard lots of creaking sounds when heaving on it in correct anti clockwise rotation. Now its spinning, 7 or 800 degrees, but not getting any looser, still need huge forces. Im thinking the casing has broken away from the base plate and its just distoring inside.
Assuming it does break away off base plate, what would be a plan for the base plate removal?

What style of filter wrench is he using?

Glen

Here is his image of the scarred casing and confirming an anti CW direction of turning.

From the paint scraped off it looks like the wrench might be slipping.
I bought a metal small strap type clamp for the MK3. It has never slipped. That type might be worth a try.
I recall my fabric strap wrench did slip on a MK 3 filter years ago.
Will take a photo of the wrench, although if the can is moving without the base, that's not going to help.

I have the same type of wrench and it has always worked well. I think the problem is that the filter is somehow frozen on the spindle. Suggest trying to get a crack opened (carefully) with a screwdriver and spraying inside with Liquid Wrench

This little strap wrench works nicely on the Commando but wouldn't work on the Daytona 955i with its full fairings in the way of the handle.
I bought the 3 claw wrench for use on the Daytona but it's my new favourite now. Either will work but if purchasing one I would go for the 3 claw. They never slip and don't destroy a tight filter.

Filter off , goodly .
Now install the new filter with grease smeared all over the rubber ring so that this does not happen again .

This bike is in a new owners hands first oil amd filter change and uncertain how long the stuck filter was on there.

Thankfully resolved, but easy to overcome as the filter can be unbolted and dropped relatively easily enabling replacement.
Yes had that in mind but glad didnt have to go there. The oil lines were a real fuddle trying to access when dropping the mounting plate, even worse when refitting.

I find it's best to attach the oil lines to the filter head to start with and then bolt it up and attach the free ends to their correct places

Since the original braided rubber oil lines are no longer available, what do y'all recommend as an alternative? I need to replace the ones on the Atlas. It has the Commando filter on it. I'd prefer not the red colored auto-trans lines.

I use oil lines with black woven cloth covering, looks like the braided line from a distance. The current braided line is not only expensive but badly made and does not look original it's so badly made.

One example, plenty to choose from.
