I big thanks to all for the help you have given me so far on the MKII vs the MKIII topic I started ,, There certainly are plenty of members from both camps of thought ,, I have just entered into the haggling stages of buying the red MKII with 16,000 on the clock,, at the end of the day this MKII has had only one owner from 74 to 2009 so that in itself tells the bike must have treated him pretty right for him to have kept it that long ,,
Can someone tell me what the differences are between the MKII and MKIIa ,, this MKII has the engine number of #314***
thanks ,, Cheers Paul

I've got a Mk IIA
These were built to address emissions control regulations for certain countries.
The differences are:
Annular discharge 'black-cap' silencers with balanced downpipes and a plastic airbox.
Different 2nd gear ratio.
22T gearbox sprocket.
Different battery carrier (battery fits across the frame); I'm guessing to accomodate the different airbox.
Different left-hand side panel with large plastic Dzus fastener on bottom - visible from the side.
Plastic tool tray under seat.
Different kickstart (true, but I can't say for certain what the difference is - perhaps to give greater clearance for the different silencers?).

I have previously owned both a mk2 a mk3 and now a mk2a 1 will offer my 2 cents, i sugest you address the bike on its merrits i.e. find the best bike in your budget, mk2 and 2a were built fo different markets [different emission requirements] but were basicly built along side each other, a freinds mk2 was built almost a year after my mk2a and excluding the airbox and mufflers [which mine lost years ago] they are very simular though any upgrade were implented adhoc. mk3 had a number of up grades- rear disc brake vernier isolastics inspetion port for cam chain stronger crank [extra bolt in crank] 3 phaze alternator and electric starter which given todays advaned gel batteries and other minor upgrades i beleive could be made to work properly. An interstate tank is a deffernate advantage, again i repeat find the best bike [condition milage etc] in your budget

The 3 phase (RM24) alternator was never offered on a Norton motorcycle. The Mk3 has a 180watt, full wave rectified alternator (RM23), but is still a single phase device with two zener diodes.

Thanks to all members for your advise and input ,, I have now purchased :D the red 74 MKII 850 , it's a real cheery bike and I am very pleased to be able to add it to my small group ,, It is going to take a few weeks before I see it but I will try and post some pics when it arrives ,,

Can anyone give me a build date for engine number 3146** ? ,, Cheers Paul

There appears to be 2 chief sources for Commando production dates and various authors use either of them. There is a discrepancy of around 4 months in most of the period I think, after 1972. My 850 Mk2 is a 308 engine, gearbox and frame. The VIN plate is stamped 9 - 73, i.e. September 1973 and I have to rely on that despite one of the common production date lists showing 308 to be in February 1974 or thereabouts.

Just another mystery from the factory to amuse us.

Mine's 3084**, date on frame 9/73, confirmed by UK NOC - it rubbed handlebars with Possm's bike on the production line!

Do you have a plate on the headstock that gives the date my MK II is engine number 315014 and that is May 1974 so you must be only slightly before that..

Cheers Paul

As far as I know, noise emissions were what was addressed with the MK IIA and MK II. Even in California, there weren't any exhaust emission standards until 2006 in CA.

Presumably, you mean MkIIA and MkIII?

Both the 850 Mk1A (a model the US didn't get) and Mk2A were low noise emission models intended for the European market.

The USA got the Mk2 model although some Mk2As were eventually sold in the USA later in '74.

Just wondering, is Mk2A header pipe different than a Mk2?

Just wondering, is Mk2A header pipe different than a Mk2?

Yes, according to the 850 Mk2/Mk2A supplement, however, Mk2 Roadster and Hi-Rider pipes were not the same as Mk2 Interstate and Interpol pipes.

So the Mk 2A/1A is different from the Mk 1/2.
And the Mk 3 is different than all of them.
3 different OEM 850 Roadster pipes. The Mk 3 I understand.

What makes the 2A/1A different from the 1/2?
Is it the sweep, are they longer, just wondering..
I've seen new Re-pop Mk 2A's for sale and was wondering what's the diff in a regular Mk 2/1?

Or more?
From previous discussions, it seems early the Mk2As could have had the same pipes as the Mk1A and later Mk2As had the Mk3 style flared pipes.
According to the Mk2/2A supplement, the Mk2A exhaust pipe part numbers are the same as for Mk3 pipes (065256 & 065257) however it seems unlikely the Mk2A pipes were the same bend as Mk3 at least not on the LH side.

According to the 850 parts lists, the pipe part numbers are:

063997/063998, Mk1 Roadster and Hi-Rider
063999/064000, Mk1 Interstate and Interpol
065464/065465, Mk2 Roadster and Hi-Rider
065466/065467, Mk2 Interstate and Interpol
064202/064203, Mk1A (and possibly early Mk2A)
065256/065257, Late Mk2A but same part numbers as Mk3.

What makes the 2A/1A different from the 1/2?
Is it the sweep, are they longer, just wondering..

I believe pipes for blackcaps/bean cans had a slightly different bend ahead of the silencer due to the shape.
MKII - MKIIA (2010)

MKII A are probably different due to the larger diameter muffler. They had to make them big to get that coffee can into there. I have used MK I head pipes on the MK III for additional ground clearance. They do require a couple dents.
