MK3 Air Filter

I am replacing the stock air filter in my Mk3 and I don't recall (hey I'm old) into which slot the element installs. There appears to be 3 potential winners. I need true enlightenment.

The centre is the only actual 'slot'. Upper and lower are not, and the filter would not locate correctly in either the upper or lower positions.
