Hi all,
I am getting together a gearbox for my spare commando.
However the inner cover is mk3 type, has anyone fitted one of these to non MK3 gearbox and whats involved? Thanks in anticipation.

The Mk3 inner gearbox cover will fit any box. However, I am not sure whether you are planning this for a Mk3 or earlier model. Since the Mk3 cover has the bushing for the left side shift cross shaft this will not be appropriate for anything other than an Mk3 model.

Of course a matching Mk3 outer cover must also be used.

Many thanks Ron,

I was hoping to fit the cover to the earlier type gearbox, if I cannot do this I will have to put the cover in the spares box & find another one.
Cheers .
hursty.

Hursty,

I'm pretty sure it's do-able but it's a long time since I had both components in my hand. The Mk 3 Inner cover has what is a blind drilling in the earlier cover drilled right through and an oil seal fitted in the back.

The pawl carrier of course has a splined shaft on the back and is bushed into the outer cover rather than the other way round as previously.

I think that you will just need to blank off the hole for the cross shaft and possibly modify the top hat bush.

The only other difference that springs to mind is that the Mk111 quadrant has a ball instead of a roller but if you're using the early type, it can't make any difference.

Nothing to lose by giving it a try !

The MkIII inner cover bush is not actually a top hat type, it has no flange as it is a thin wall bush, so I think some kind of spacer would be needed to fit where the flanged part of the top hat bush would normally sit, or possibly modify the cover to take the earlier bush?

Many thanks to all for your contributions, I now have a way forward and a step nearer to being on the road :)

Sorry, poor use of English there  I was assuming use of the earlier selector mechanism and that this would probably require use of the earlier bush. Offering it up is the easiest way to see what needs doing.
