I removed primary on 1974 Commando to install rear is and found 2 wire circlips on mainshaft..Going to replace these but only find flat steel ones..Are they interchangable? And the parts book only shows one circlip..

Only one wire clip (#53) under the cup (#54) on my '74. Any history from the PO for clutch repairs?

I think PO tightened the clutch nut too tight and dislodged the circlip...Then they put spacer #54 against mainshaft and put new circlip outside that part...Anyway got new iso in and problems with the spacer and circlip sorted out...Thanks for the info...

06-8072 circlip. May need to thin it a tad on glass surface with fine emery to get it to tightly fit .

There is a burr formed by the stamping of the clip on one side of this clip. As with most circlip operations, this burr faces the force of the work, which in this case, face the gearbox and not the clutch.

If you happen to need to reduce the thickness, be sure NOT to alter this burr side of the clip and be sure to install it with the burr face the proper direction, the gearbox.

Circlips this small are stamped out of steel sheets I believe ,correct me if wrong , as they exit the sheet they might have such a protrusion lip . Very small for sure, so choose this side to put the fine emery to on glass or plate steel surface in order to reduce thickness a very little to slide carefully over shaft without any twisting actions at all . A micrometer would help for perfectionists. Mine took 2 attempts , carefully reducing thickness twice until "voila" moment where a flat tipped drift tapped it home into slot gently. Solid fit with no slop concerning future clutch basket support issues. Mainshaft nut less torque than the manual with Locktite too. Nice mini-project. :)

Wrong. Although information is scant in this circumstance, I might wager that this knowledge may be more common to aircraft technicians.
Do not remove the sharp edge of a circlip of any type, apply it in the direction of the force/work.
As the clutch not is tightened, the force/work points to the gearbox. Therefore, the sharp edge of the circlip must also face the direction of the gearbox.

Although this is about aircraft pistons and a different type of circlip, the information is universal.

I'm saying , just make the circlip mentioned as an improvement fit actually fit tight into the stoopid little slot. Kinda like sex , whatever works, ha.
