Mk3 gearbox: mainshaft circlip

It's hard for me to imagine that little circlip taking 80 ft lbs of torque pressure against such a small cross section of material after being so careful lining the primary up. I use the thicker clip lapped to fit, 40 ft lbs and blue loctite on clean threads.

It will be more prone to failure and cause other issues if the clutch location spacer is put in the wrong way around. The recess must go over the circlip.

My experience (other results may vary). I tried the later circlip (8072?). Took me about half an hour sanding on emory cloth to get to fit on my 750, however when i spread it to install it, it permanently deformed (would not spring back) and i only opened up just enough to get over the shaft. I had another clip, but said screw it. I did not want to go through the trouble of sanding down again and just fitted the stock clip. I only torqued the clutch nut to 45 ft-lbs. Figured that wouldn't overly stress the clip with little risk of the nut of backing out by using loctite and the later retaining washer

I had exactly the same experience. The circlip wasn’t heat treated properly and just opened up when I went to pass it over the shaft. I really should have fed this back to AN.

Yes , If Andover could make a harder material circlip that would be great . A tad thicker for the slot would be good. No slop but a nice tight fit .
Yes , in the meantime , 06-8072 is an option for a tighter fit in the main shaft slot .
Yes , it's easier to twist it and ruin all the work you did to make it a bit thinner.
If you can get it over the main shaft end ( grease the shaft a bit ) carefully , without any twisting forces then gently use a flat head punch to evenly tap her home into the slot , then tap with the same punch into the slot , all of this evenly all around taps .
A slow careful process , but this worked for me , 2nd. attempt , as the first was a failure , with my somewhat brutal circlip twisting forces a factor in the twist failure . .
Enjoy.
