Country flag
I just replaced the layshaft bearing and case. Everything looks right, the selector appears to be timed right, I can move it well with a screwdriver and the cover off. I believe I'm having issues with the ratchet. With the cover on, I make one shift and that's it, it won't shift anymore. Looking down between the cases I can see the ratchet pin engaged with the ball so that didn't come out, all I can think is the ratchet is not engaging. I flipped the spring over thinking I had it wrong but, the same deal, the gap seems about right and it lays flat against the paw when actuated. I ordered a new spring. any advice?

You could be right, however, have you tried turning the rear wheel at the same time as you are changing gear?

Selecting gears by moving the quadrant doesn't rely on the quadrant being in exactly the right position so can you be absolutely sure the shift quadrant isn't mistimed to the camplate (by one tooth)?

4th gear clicks right in with the arm right up against the top of the slot in the inner case. If there is another way to tell enlighten me please. Thanks

That's hard to tell from the description. Even if you followed the setup procedure in the workshop manual it's not impossible for it to be a tooth out and I'm not suggesting it is definitely the cause of the problem but only a possibility based on the available information.

Although not a good photo it shows the quadrant position in 4th gear.

LAB that picture is worth a thousand words. The drawing in the workshop manual is vague to say the least. This photo shows it like it is.

That's right where mine appears to be. I spent a lot of time to get that right and would be surprised if it's off, but anything is possible. I'll wait for the spring and see if that does the trick before I pull the inner cover off again.

Sounds like the quadrant is out by one tooth. Had a similar problem . Shifts up and down with the inner cover off but shifts into a false neutral and stays there with the inner cover and outer cover on. Easy to fix. With the inner cover off, index plunger bolt loosened off and layshaft out, push the quadrant up all the way up so the quadrant disengages and turn the cam wheel a bit and move the quadrant down and re-engage. See the Fitting the Cam Plate section in the Old Britts Assembling the Commando Gearbox.
