Street motor ??
Bear in mind this is about exactly TWICE the output of a stock 850. Itself a reasonably capable street bike.
So while perhaps not impossible, its more than the race JPN Nortons had back in their day.

And somewhere about where Mr Dreer was with the (much altered)(and much $$) VR880's ??

If ya could run on methanol or nitromethane then 90 hp 850 is quite reasonable to achieve excepting when time to fill up again. I always wonder what you hot rodders would do with the extra drive train and tire strain. Getting into the 70 hp range can easy spin tire in only half ass leans and around 90 hp street tires are touchy squirrely grippers upright in lower gears when grabbing a hand full to approach full power output. Passing temptations occur constantly and what once looked too close to chance becomes quite practical if not exactly safe or legal. Wheelies become easy too so a fun skill tapping the torque onset. Cheapest fastest down and dirty 90+ hp 850 would be to snag Bruce MacGregor's long tested and dialed in Drouin supercharger and a fancy programmable ignition. Track days would be unforgettable. Leaving tire burn out designs in streets and parking lots could be a new graffiti hobby. W/o boost you are stuck with the race level engine investment and not blow right up. We had a post on cost of race level engines and both my own figures and the racers figures matched within $1000 or so, $12,000 at least if everything done best there is nowadays. Every hot rodder should study that P11's RIP roaring end.

Surely with some lightweight rods and pistons, decent cylinderhead,Carbs, cam and some loud pipes you must be nearly there? l

Sure, you can buy a full race motor, for mucho $$$, that would get you there.
But you then have a gearbox, clutch, brakes and suspension that need upgrading to handle it.

And for street bike use, has very little gain for mucho $$$.
Mr Dreer investigated this path....

If you want KTM performance, ride a KTM ?
If you want Kawasaki performance, ride a Kawasaki ??

Now with Mr Cosentino front suspension $800 and Mr Maxtons rear shocks $800 and Mr Lockheed or Mr Brembos brakes 85bhp doesn`t sound so bad. I want a Norton to confuse guys on KTM,s and Kawasakis!
This after all a theoretic discussion. Are we still allowed to dream

I was just thinking the same thing. Ha

Hmmm,

the way I look at it is this...I have 9 bikes, two are yamaha R1s, amazingly fast and nimble bikes, and surprisingly ride-able as daily drivers. I have a old bmw R75 (with 164,000 miles on it) a CB 750K4 and a few others including my 2 Fastbacks. All are fun and get ridden regularly

You take into account the rules of the road we all have to obey to avoid jail and take into account how much you/we ride (I ride every day of the year). I have come to this conclusion;

It more fun to ride a slow bike fast, that a fast bike slow. (i.e. laws that must be followed)

But...yes I would like to feel what a 100 hp Commando is like to ride anyway

If we only live once better make once enough I say, knowing full well it could kill me or anyone. How fast ya want to afford to go? Are ya up to risking life and limb to really use what that kind of hp can drive and isolastic Commando into? I've tried to explain to nay sayers it ain't me its Ms Peel that even a jerky novice like me can have their way with. Again I repeat it ain't me and you've no idea what ya'll missing out on even on normal hp Commando.

Do you really know how much them warmed over balloon tires can grip before they become dangerous corner cripples? Handling in the more dangerous places is about only places you'll impress modern sport riders and they likely can out handle the vintage racers in same elements power planting wise.

As for bee line sprints youtube up what an 11 sec bike is like, then a 10 sec 1/4 milers and so on. Those willing to sport with you likely on at least 11 sec bikes that ain't done by the 1/4 mile neither, nor would be a 90 hp Norton still loosing ground faster and faster. 90 hp Commando might even keep up in 1st and 2nd if got a good start to 80's or 90's mph. This is the realistic range of public road race contests not Dayton banked curves all out in top gear. In this ton range, a hopped up Commando definitely can be competitive if ya willing to use up sleeve gear bushes and safety of rev limiter.

It is one of the best highs for an adrenalized guy to beat a gang out numbered or spank snooty sports bikers that can out horse power ya in the long runs. Technical dangerous road racing ain't about top end horse power its about how much torque ya can apply to the ground over the next guy. A tammed Cdo can do that amazingly to all concerned. If ya live in the flat lands with just straights and a few 90's then snag MacGregor's ready to run Drouin and leave the naturally slower guys behind with more torque to mass ratio than you'll find out in public.

So why waste your life on fantasy motorcycles....

Why do men climb mountains ?. Because they are there.

Only justifying why I am currently building a supercharged short stroke.

Last week,Four guys in Scotland aint climbing any more mountains, If you want to get the "feel "of 100BHP commando, find a road like the cat and fiddle in cheshire and ride your stock Commando from Macclesfield-Buxton as fast as you dare, when you complete the course..or should i say if. Ask yourself the question...was 50 bhp enough?

The answer is MORE THAN ENOUGH! apart from excessive brake fade, and wobbly corning...you will scare yourself to death. The road as blind switch backs, off camber corners, steep U bends and all nicely dry stone walled...Google map it.
The "Cat" is Motorcycle New's most DANGEROUS road and many have been killed , it got that bad Bears in the Air and unmarked police bikes patroled everyweek end
Now 100bhp on an American free way, well it's not quite the same.?
