Hello all!

New Norton owner, recently purchased a 69 750s, and I am in the process of fixing her up a bit.

So far I have had Phil Radford do his wonderful exhaust thread repair, purchased a really nice set of used high pipes for it, and just dropped the head of with my machinist to surface, grind seats and install Kibblewhite valves, guides and springs.

I also puchased Emgo replacement fork tubes, and that's what I'm working on today. These forks have the long chrome seal holder. In looking at many pictures of "S" models, I'm having trouble figuring out if they should have fork gaitors or not.

Does anyone know if they should or should not? Best place to buy replacements if they should?

Thanks in advance, Davo

+1 great site , many helpful people here, my brothers old "S" model didn't have gaiters on it but it was not brand new when he got it and the previous owners might have changed them out...( they looked "old fashioned " to us back then anyway, and we would have swapped them out if they'd have been on the bike ) :D welcome

Thanks for the replies! I'm in San Rafael Ca, just north of San Francisco. I added location to my profile as well. I would prefer to run dust wipers rather than gaiters, but it seems with the long chrome fork seal holder that won't work out. Is there a smaller seal holder that will accomodate the wipers?

Hi davo. welcome. You've come to the right place, in just a short while, some very knowledgeable masters will be here with original sales images, etc. Good luck. Pics please...

Wecome Davo, I like the gaiters look on my front end and using them will make your seals last a lot longer by keeping all the crap from getting in, I am not a big fan of Emgo parts as have a few problems with them in the past, but that another story, yes please some pics would be great and enjoy your new life with a Norton, you will have lots of fun.

L.A.B, thanks for the link to the correct parts! I was hoping I could change seal holders and use dust wipers instead! I give Phil a call on Monday and see what he has for seal holders and wipers The lower triple also has / had a round cover that the top of the gaiter atachted to .

Ashman, I do realize the gaiters can extend fork life, but in my experience they are also a trap for dirt and moisture so can also have the opposite effect.

Though she's not much to look at right now, top end off, body work off, exhaust off, front end off, I will post some pics next week, and update as progress continues. I'm excited for my first Brit bike after almost 20 years of restoring and riding vintage Hondas!

I also puchased MKIII isolastics and will be installing them before long as well.

Thanks, Davo

Hi Dave

Are you new to the SF area Brit bike community or just new to Nortons?

Aren't gaiter surpose to keep dirt out and the small hole at the bottom is to get any moisture out as well, if they have the right clamps around the top and bottom of the gaiters how would they get any dirt in them in the first place, the last time I pull my gaiters up to see inside they were still nice and clean with no sign of moisture at all.

You can download the parts book here http://www.eurooldtimers.com/eng/manual ... 1970-.html Note there's a supplement in the back for the 'S' model. Some of the part numbers are a bit hard to figure out and there's no pictures that I know of anywhere of how the oil tank and battery tray go together. If you need any info, let me know. I have plenty pictures.

illf8ted, I have done the Moto Melee for the last 3 years, and have been riding with the Point Reyes Saturday morning breakfast crew for some time as well. Grew up riding Jap bikes, so that what I've been riding and restoring. Borrowed a 75 850 Commando from PZ for last years all Brit ride, and fell in love! So yes, new to Brit bikes, but not the people riding them. I've been focused on 60s Hondas for the last 10 years, mostly 250-305 Scramblers and Superhawks. Stock restorations and one off customs, have stocks of parts and knowledge concerning those bikes. Nortons are completely new to me, but with the help of many of my Brit bike riding friends, I've learned a lot already, but still know relatively nothing about them. Every repair is new to me and a challenge, which I am loving!!! Perhaps we have ridden together?

Ashly, when I removed the gaiters, there was a lot of debris and rust inside the long chrome fork seal holders. The design of these do not let water drain out.

DogT, thanks for the link, will come in handy for sure!

Squarehead, thanks for the welcome! Everyone has been very helpful so far!

I usually avoid my shop on Sundays, but I'm so excited about the Norton I make sneak down there for a while today :-)

Thanks, Davo

Davomoto,
Quite a pedigree ,are you registered with the Kennel Club ?
J

Not the kennel club, but the local mental institution is well aware of me :-)

Not trying to step on toes here, just giving some background being a new member!

Davo

Davomoto,

Your in the 69 club now Dave and believe me you'd be cheaper joining the kennel club, but not as happy.

J

Yeah, I shoveled out a few bucks on this one already, but no kennel clubs for me! Just certifiable formal and informal motorcyle clubs.

Ended up cutting my seals holders down, as they were rusty and pitted. Ordered a set of dust covers, should be here later in the week!

Good luck, Davo. I'm an ex-Norton Engineer ( Feb 1967- May 68) and spent a lot of time on the Commando prototype development and the AJS Atormer program. I got fed up with mis-management and the lack of decent funding and emigrated to join Boeing.

Now retired (15 years ago!) after 30 years with Boeing, but at my age (73) not physically involved with motorcycles anymore.

Welcome Davo, I love the roads up by you, hope to be riding up there again some time.. Sounds like your off to a good start with your bike & have a good bunch around for help. Of course finding this forum will lead to any answers and endless ways to rid your wallet of any extra cash laying round getting old... Enjoy, Glenn T.S.

Frank and GTsun,

Thanks so much for the replies. What I love about forums dedicated to a certain brand etc, is the unbelievable collective knowledge that is contained in all of the good people riding bikes!!!

Wow, working for Norton back in the day, a dream and nightmare job all rolled into one eh?
