In 1973 as the logo on the tank clear coated?

Hi All I'm redoing my tank and i wanted to know if in 1973 when the bike was new was the "Norton" logo on the tank clear coated ? I'm sure someone knows..

I've been told "no", but can't confirm.

I say coat it to keep it from being scratched, stained or scuffed

The reason why I'm asking is because we tried to clearcoat and it bubbled and so if the decal was put on after when it was new then thats what i will do

I've been told they didn't clearcoat ANYTHING back then. The pinstripe was done by hand and the decals were simply stuck on -soon to dry up and fall off.

No the arigional decacal was individual letters that stick on both tank and sidecovers, i still have a damaged sidecover in origonal paint from an 850 i owned in the 70's.

The factory stuck them on after paint. I clear coat mine and anyone else's Norton that I paint. There was a recent thread here about bubbling decals and what to do about it.

My original '73 750 has the one piece tank and side cover logos (not individual die cut) and they are on top of the paint (and clearcoat, if any). I'm not sure if the 850's were the same. I know they were die cut on the '74 and '75 models.

My two '72's factory paint and decals had decal edges exposed to finger nails and weather. Be pensive applying enough clear coat to point can't feel decal edges.
Best use stencil if that's the goal rather than just good as new Norton show room.
