The stamped plate on the frame should have this info in the form of a month/year eg 09/71, if not then the Norton Owners Club will provide the info for a fee.

I tried to answer your email to me but the messages were rejected. Here is my first answer:

That's not possible but I would say before Jan 71 and after Aug 70 and I would says it was a Roadster or Fastback MKII.
If you really want to know, then you need to order the record from Andover Norton.
Eventually, people who have ordered factory records in the serial range will provide info to my survey and it will be possible to get closer but right now, I have nothing concrete to go on.

Here is my second answer:

When you say "frame" are you talking about stamped into the frame on the side of the headstock or are you talking about the red certification label?

The bike gearbox is not original to the bike.

If there is no certification label or it doesn't have the Month/Year on it, simply say Nov 70 or order the factory record from Andover Norton: https://andover-norton.co.uk/en/factory-records/

According to Norvil, 140156 is a 70.
Probably first sold in 71 and then registered as a 71.
If the center stands attaches to the frame, it's a 70.
If it attaches to the cradle, it's 71.
The trans # is a 71.

This is mostly relevant so You know what parts to buy.

I appreciate both replies to my question
the serial number I refer to is stamped on the red plate on frame .
I do not have it here yet to see stamping on frame or howthe center stand attaches .
Andover- norton told me there is a gap in the factory records and that they cannot supply me any info on this serial number .
it is registered as a 1971 .
the reason I wanted to know is that bringing it into the USA they ask for Year and month built ?
the registration papers in Canada do not show month built .
to me it makes no difference , I do not plan to make it origional .
this one will be built with my preferences , like the upswept 750 S model , fireflake purple , newer style rims , electric start .
would like to find the pancake style seat .
I already have two 69 commando S , blue fireflake bikes now .
my buddy and I bought them new in 69 .
again , thank you guys for giving me a response.

If you can't ask anyone what the label says, then I would do as I said before and say Nov 70 or fourth quarter 1970. It is doubtful that anyone will check and if they do, it's a simple mistake an off very little. Since there is a label, there should be no stamping on the frame - the date should be on the label. I'm most interested in it since there is a conflict in the numbers around that time. Also, the AN page I sent you to says that they have the records on that bike - surprising that they don't. Maybe the NOC has them.

Will check .
i really don’t care but customs does .
i will pick a month , the registration supports the year
the data tag on frame and stamped engine supports the serial numbers .
the frame plate was painted over but you can see the serial number thru the paint.
I am not sure customs will care that much with a 200 dollar bike of that age .

I have my original frame tag from my 72 and there is NO date stamped on it so not all got the date stamped

I know - that's one of the data points I'm trying to capture. What is your serial number, is it a matching numbers bike, what head?

I sent you the number in a pm it is a numbers matching and it is a combat. the motor is getting tired as it has 50,000 miles on it. I have an 850 motor i am looking to build and keep the 750 on the shelf as i would hate to break it with a hole in the case's.

For decades, when I come to Government “toll gate” like month & year built, I will to the best of my knowledge always suply accurate data. If you don’thave exact data, nobody gives a rats ass. 10-70. Done.
If you can’t find any hard data, how in the world could they possibly prove you wrong?
If they ever challenged it, “that was the best info I could find on this old bike”
The truth.
No drama.

Thanks guys
I have a broker doing the customs papers today
I have arranged it to get trailered to the birder , a tow truck company will tow the trailer across the border thru customs .
we will meet the tow company on the other side to take from there .
i also had an antique aircraft on the trailer and had room to put the norton on back .
we did supply as accurate as possible info on both .
the aircraft was on the aircraft registery and the norton had a title .
I think we are good .
ihavea guy that said he will be with the norton records next week and will get me the build info .
I talked to a norton restoration shop today about this build .
I think I will send them the engine and transmission to rebuild .
i can take care of getting the frame checked for straightness , repaint it , don’t think powder coating is the way to go ?
the front end assembly will be rebuilt by a friend that worked on nortons for years ,
mostparts I will buy new to replace bad chrome parts .
new cables , clutch , andover-norton electric start , need to get someone to relace new rims , LOOKING FOR A NORTON PANCAKE SEAT .
will put the steel tank and side covers on this one , found a guy today to do the fireflake paint job .
I have four other sets of glass tanks and side covers , will get a set done in the fireflake emeraldgreen , a set in the red And set in black .
( I already have two 69 S in the blue , bought these bikes new and kept them )
this way I can change the colors easily on this bike as I feel like .
plan to assemble it myself with my grandson , then it will become his someday.
my grandson is into bikes and planes like me . Good kid .
will let you know what the guy in England finds out .....

SORRY IF I MISSED YOUR PM ?
was this directed to my 71 serial number ?
if so , how did you determine it had 50,000 miles ?
thanks for reply ....

Very strange statement - those engine numbers span a long time. If they are saying MK2 750s are in that range, and they have any proof, that would be great to know as it contradicts much of what I have gleaned from books and other sources for that period.

What organization in England sent the email?

Did you receive the bike and is there a metal label on the headstock, and if so does it have the Month and Year?

Have not received bike yet
going thru customs next week sometime .
likely a few more weeks until I get my hands on it .
i do not care exactly what date it was built . It is registered as a 71 .
i was trying to confirm build date for one of the customs questions ?
they require it it .
just trying to give them the info as correctly as I can .
