Hello All,
I'm having Brent at the Vintage Vendor respray my 1973 Roadster 750, black with gold lettering. I'd like to add gold pin striping to the tank and side covers (if applicable), but am having difficulty finding an original picture of a '73 750 black roadster with pin striping. I've scoured this site and various other internet resources and am coming up with empty. Lots of folks who've added various striping schemes, but not sure what would have been original.

I've seen some brochures and it looks as if the '72 had the "D" shaped striping, the '73 and '74 850's with the "two into one" striping. I've located the '73 Interstates with a single pin stripe. My question is, did the '73 750 Roadster have any pin striping, and if so, which one?

I vote 0 striping.
I had a Black, 73 750 for a brief time in the early 2000's.
It had only the gold Norton and 750 Commando on the covers.
Reasonably sure it was original.

However, I am no expert....

Looks like no stripes anywhere for 73 750 Roadsters .

My original 73 850 black roadster tank had the two into one gold stripe.

The black Roadsters in 72 had the thick "D" stripe in Gold - the Sep 1972 Cycle Guide Magazine shows it, and the 72 parts manual confirms it. So does the 73 Parts manual. I think blue had the same lining, but in silver. I'm talking about steel tanks - I haven't researched Fiberglass tanks.

I have 72/73 Black Roadster tanks painted with the thick "D" stripe and if I ever do a black 750 72/73 Interstate it will have the thick line.

Teh double pinstripes were 850 only AFAIK and only 850s had lines on the side panels.

Black 750 Roadsters had the single gold 'D' tank tripe and no panel stripe '71 - '73. (although 750 Roadsters are often seen repainted with 850 double stripes it isn't correct). Other 750 Roadster colours normally had no pinstripes.

I have a 73 factory poster hanging on my wall and all except the Interpol have thin double pinstripes. Interstate and Hi Rider had no stripes on the side covers.

If you choose to go the “ D “ route here is my all original ( before repaint ) June 1972 Manufacture 750 tank in black .
Please help identify the correct pin stripe scheme for a 73 Commando 750 ( if there is one).

Was going to take a pic, but my August '72 built Roadster has the same original tank as Richard's shown above ('73 750 may be different) (mine's fiberglass)

The 750 MkV spec. (black clock pods, silver barrels etc.) presented to Dave Croxford had the 'D' stripe after Williams won the 1973 Formula 750 TT race on the Isle of Man. The event was no doubt arranged for the purposes of publicity, therefore, it seems unlikely the management would have allowed Croxford's bike to have an outdated pinstripe scheme...

NOR 750L and 850L were genuine registrations, NOR 750L, registered in May '73 and still exists.

However, below is what could be a factory picture of a late 750 Roadster with 850 pinstripes and has some later '73 features such as the chainguard extension and 180-degree banjo fuel line so the possibility that some late 750s had '850' pinstripes cannot be completely ruled out.

A quote from that article:
"The year is 1967. A black motorcycle is kick-started awake, then settles into a deep, burbling idle. Soon a rider mounts and turns the wick. Down the asphalt they hurtle, reaching an electronically timed 142.74 mph. A race-modified Honda 750 Four? No. A 750 Norton Commando twin, claimed to be bog-stock but for a handlebar fairing and optional 24-tooth countershaft sprocket."

The "year" was 1973 and it was an 850 Commando. (There was no claim that it was "bog-stock" either but had been "...tuned in accordance with Service Release M3/56" dated June, '73,...)

Wow! what a trip down memory lane. The Norton girls were such eye candy to a 24 year old just out of the Army and looking for some fun. I had the money too with my mustering out pay.

Wow.
MCW rag....
$1467.00
Warranty 3 months or 4000 miles.
Just about the time when the Amal slides and bodies would wear out.
What a trip in history.

Nope, the only 750 Roadster with stripes is the '71-'72 black tank 'D' stripe. Oddly, I've never seen an original black '73 MkV 750 Roadster. Interstates, but not a Roadster. All the other colors are not striped. No 750 had stripes on the side covers. Here's my original paint blue '73 750 with gold w/black tank and sidecover decals. '73 Blue 850's had silver lettering, silver stripes.
