I need help. I have an 85 year-old friend who is currently dying from lung cancer. He cannot speak, so we converse by text message. Yesterday he told me how much he likes the Heartbeat TV series. He is an ex-pet Brit and it reminds him of when he was young. I have previously asked about Bernard Scripps' motor garage in Aidensly, and was told the name of the town in which it is situated, and the names of the guys who own the 7R AJS which is used as a prop. I think their name was Andrews. Could you possibly tell me anything about their activities in historic racing, - also what is the real name of Aidensley. We think it might be in Yorkshire.
My friend's name is John Feakes. He has been in Australia since the late 1960s. He has been active on our historic racing committees.

Sorry to hear about your friend Al.
Can't help with the name of the town - but maybe one of these links will be of comfort to him. (the last one's a doozy that I hadn't seen before!)
(I have the Heartbeat 1 & 2 CDs if you'd like me to post them to you - PM me)
Cheers
Rob

Google images , tv Scripps garage aidensfield, there's 73 pics of it.
Bernie did not appear till episode 5
There were two garage interiors , they changed it once, but Berine Scripps didn't like it and told them to change it.
Goathland station also appears in some episodes.

Hi Al
I’m very sorry to hear about your friend.
Have you and he checked for Heartbeat on Wikipedia ?
There is a lot of information your freind may find interesting
with links to further sources.

I will try Wikipedia. I've googled for info, but the real name of the town is difficult to find. My friend has looked at the CRMC web pages to see if he can find anything about the Andrews brothers in historic racing. John Feakes has been in OZ since the late 60s, however I have only known him for the last 20 years. He is one of those guys that when you say something to him he always knows what you mean - no bulshit with him. He raced a garden gate Manx in the UK. He was divorced from his first marriage with his mother-in-laaw named as co-respondent. She raced cars and he spent more time with her than with his wife.
At the moment he is staying optimistic. That is all you can do in his situation. I think he has lived a good life. As I said to him 'I think we have lived in times when things have been as good as they are ever going to be.'. Everyone gets their turn to go. At my age they are dying around me like flies. The good thing is you never hear the news about your own death.

Thanks for that. I'll look and probably download. I think his DVD p[layer still works.

When we were young, there were no speed cameras and the police had to follow you for a considerable distance before that could book you. But there were no STOP signs on the side streets. Heartbeat is about that era.

actorel, did you not google the adenisfield I posted?
Or do you have different internet information down under?

The name of the village you are looking for is called Goathland, it is in North Yorkshire approximately 10 miles from Whitby ..Scripps garage is still there, the village draws a fair amount of tourists throughout the year largely because of the Heartbeat connection....Hope this helps....

Hi Al,
Please find below a section out of the long Wikipedia information for Heartbeat. Hope it helps. Staytite

Filming[edit]

Heartbeat

Across Eller Beck to Goathland railway station

The series was filmed at various locations around North Yorkshire. These include shots on the moors and frequent mentions of local roads (like the A171.) Exterior scenes of Aidensfield are filmed in the village of Goathland in North Yorkshire, with the village's railway station also appearing occasionally. Other prominent filming locations include Whitby, Otley and Scarborough. The "Heartbeat: Changing Places" special includes location filming in Canada and two series 18 episodes were filmed on location in Queensland, Australia.[8]

In 2005–07 Hornby Railways based a Skaledale Model series on Goathland railway station, part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which features in the show as Aidensfield railway station.

When real-life maps are shown, the town of Ashfordly appears to correspond to the location of Grosmont, approximately 6 miles (10 km) southwest of Whitby.

Dick Craven supplied the A10 Police bike.
Dick runs a very successful Norvin Sprinter. He takes on litre Sportbikes, Hayabusas and so on. He rarely loses.

My friend is very happy with the information you guys were able to supply. He thinks the closes race circuit to Gathland would be Smettertton. He might be thinking about the 7R AJS which sometimes appears as a tantalising prop. You never wee the whole bike.

I visited the garage in 2016. I spoke with the owner and found out he ran a classic bike race team and regularly enters his machines at the Classic TT.
The closest race tracks to Goathland would be either Croft or Scarborough I would have thought.
I did take a few pictures of the bikes inside, I'll have to see where I put them.

I think somebody said the name of the owner of the garage is Andrews, but Jefferies could be right.
It is really funny - I used 7R wheels in my Triton in the 1960s. When I watched Heartbeat, I knew straight away what that wheel was which was sitting on the bench in the garage. But I have only ever seen one half of the bike in any episode.

Bob Woods ran the garage, Nick Jefferies was one of his riders along with Gavin Lupton.
I'll try and dig out the pictures of the bikes in the garage the day I went. I think they were on my phone and if so will be lost, that's one of the troubles with camera phones against proper cameras.

Nearest to Goathland wouldbe Olivers Mount .

True , they run excellent hill climbs. I am assuming Smettertton.is a typo for Snetterton which is miles away. Cadwell and Mallory would both be much closer. There might have been an airfield track in Yorkshire but do not know
