I have just replaced the head gasket on my '71 750 after 20 years of use, it had started leaking oil at thr front right side, & now, the new gasket is leaking worse than the old! I used a new eyeletted gasket with a smear of blue hylomar around the pushrod tunnels, re-tightened after 50 miles & within another 25 miles oil is dripping from thr head to barrel joint at the front. I have removed the head again & the gasket seems generally oily most of the way around.

What do you use to seal the oil? Should I need some sealant around the drain hole at the rear also? What type of sealant is recommended?

New gasket should be here tomorrow so advice would be much appreciated.

Bob.

Head gaskets blow gasses. Oil lines blow oil. I have done the same thing by changing a headgasket and finding the leak worse than before. the culprit was the oilfeed line at the head banjo right at the barb. This is not noticeable at idle but can really blow at high rpm. It generally drips down through the fins and is seen coming from the head joint area towards the front. Correct?
Pull, flex or bend the oil line slightly to revel a small crack usually right below the barb.

Many a riders, myself included, have had to pull over hastily due to hot oil blowing all over their leg when the line really lets go.

This is not to say that oil CAN'T come from the head, but in this area it is a flow down issue rather than a oil pressure issue (other than crankcase pressure(minimal)).

Bobo,

Are you using a copper head gasket ?, it is not uncommon to re-torque half a dozen times, When it leaks oil is generally when I re-torque.

Flame-ring gaskets need love (and retorquing) too. I'm sure I took it too far but I believe I retorqued after one heat cycle and then 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 miles.

No leaks.
