Hi All,

Due to the forum getting popular we are experiencing many hack attempts from some areas. These hackers will never get in as I have it pretty much sewn up. It's a pain as they register and I have to review loads of users accounts each day prior to allowing them to be members. About 60% are hacks. That being said I need your IP if you are in any of these countries (I am going to block the whole country). If you give me your IP I can allow you through, or you can browse by proxy you should be ok. These countries will be blocked:

Russia
China
Ukrain
Indonesia
Pakistan

Regards--Jerry

I think you should block the UK as well, they are an unruly crowd, the very root of all evil

...and Canada just got blocked. But don't worry, just the French part.

Jerry, Is Hong Kong also blocked? We are officially part of China although we have autonomy in most things to do with international organisations etc. What is an IP? You are dealing with a classic Norton enthusiast here not a computer genius, I will probably have to ask my wife or that font of all knowledge L.A.B. if it's anything complicated.

My goodness Les! If I am expected to read and understand all of that to continue my membership of this august freemasonry of like minded souls, I'm afraid I might have to get a Triumph!

Dave M

Dave,

There's no need for you to do anything, just carry on as normal. :D

(You could still get a Triumph, though)

Dave,
That's words spoken like a treasonist.
Sworn for fun loyal to one Long live King Norton :P
Just pullin your chain mate
It's cold out ya know

Les, I must admit I am already a closet Triumph (3 at last count) and BSA owner (just 1 so far). My description is literally accurate since they are stored in a closet awaiting restoration! The 4 Nortons however continue to take precedence and now that my access to the site seems secure I shall persist with the thoroughly beneficial interaction that we all enjoy here.

Hi Dave,

If for some reason you cannot see the forum later today PST, just email me jerry [at] accessnorton.com and I will give you instructions,

I will update this post after I make the changes,

regards

Jerry,
How do you block a country without access to the international connections ? I realize your IP (Internet Protocol) address is allocated by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) which will have an address block or blocks registered with it so the ISP can be identified but perhaps not all are ISPs are country specific. (ie Global Carriers or if the individual is accessing the site from a Global Corporation. ( such as IBM offices in Pakistan )

I assume places like China has firewalls on the main access connections into China and blocks information there. Hmm interesting. Is there a relationship between IP source address and country ? or is there a foolproof and easy way of identifying the country in which the source of the session resides ?.

Hi Engie,

Being in the business I know which IP blocks to block per each country. In my database I dont have all blocked for the specific countries, but most.. Infact they are now blocked as of 30 mins ago. I get fed up with the hack activities,

Cheers

Judging from my previous experience, just blocking Russia will take care of most of the spam.

Jerry, while I like your broad approach, adding a CAPTCHA might work too. Most of the stuff I saw was automated.

Jerry,

It looks like our little haven of freedom here is exempt from the blockage. I think most of the Triumph and Harley stuff is made in Thailand, China makes clones of Japanese 125s and clones of the Russian clones of pre-war BMW's. No need for us to worry, as of yet no Commando clones and I'm keeping mine under lock and key to prevent industrial espionage and reverse engineering. Didn't Barbra Streisand sing a song about this "Send in the clones".
