Does this number look like an original stamping and if so any idea of its age?

Gearbox Identification

I picked up a gearbox that externally looks like a Commando box. The case is stamped N5176. Looking at Bacon's Norton Twin restoration guide, N in an ENGINE number could mean 1958. Elsewhere, he says that Norton gearbox cases are identified with an N or NA. Any ideas what I have? And how...

This thread says pre Commando 1963 to 68 based on an article by Mike Hemmings which is deep in one of the last posts on the thread. Definitely looks like an original stamping.

Thanks John, found it in a box of spares, unfortunately the casing has a huge hole in it and was also repaired as well prior to the hole.Now in the Metalman scarp bin !!!!! I figured it was med to late 60's which is the age of the race bike the spares came with.
