Hi All
I have owned many Norton's in my 73 years but I am looking at one, an 88, where the frame number is welded into the clutch side frame side plate instead of being stamped in. All my records show frame numbers were stamped on. Engine number is correct with 122 for an 88 and the welded on frame number is also with 122 for an 88. To be sure of understanding the frame numbers are welded individually and not on a welded in plate. Has anyone seen this before.?
Thanks Les

This is welded on the drive side frame web. I have never seen this before. Even on exported or re-imported to UK Nortons the Year Code and Frame number stamps were left as standard. It is a wideline frame with bolted rear sub frame and even has the tyre pump hooks on the frame tubes under the petrol tank. As I say I have never seen this before. Thanks Les

Seems not as the factory did it, but what 70 year old doesn't have an extra mark or two?

Not original as far as I know, my 1957 Wideline is stamp where it suppose to be and same with my 1960 Slimline, looks like that has been done with a mig welder and has too many numbers to be right.

Those numbers have not been stamped on, but either engraved or what looks more likely, dot punched. I can’t imagine the factory having the time to faff around like that. I wonder if you’d find a different number under the welded on plate?

Same as both my 56 and 58 wideline 88
