My Bob Dunn/Egli 1200 shadow was a flyer...with 36mm amals, problem was the rear carb kept sucking in my trousers!
The Godet 500 is a real trick bike and should do well...

Yes please, so its a Black Rap..with two front heads...Have you seen Godots 500 racer ? very nice.

Yes it has two front heads too, you're a bit of a 'spotter' I see! I'll put the full SP in the thread when I start it.

I've seen pics of Godet's 500 and and had some chats with him about it. i even toyed with the idea of having one and racing it. It looks bloody fabulous, do you know what's gone on inside the engine cases? Awesome! I was fortunate enough to own a 1330 Godet Egli, fabulous bike, but I sold it to raise cash when buying a house. Ah well![/quote]

Try to get to Kempton on 24th May

Hi Andy, currently, if I'm not at work, asleep, or involved in some unavoidable family do, I'm in t' shed working on this bleedin' Norton!

There'll be no frivolity spending a day looking at shiny motorbikes until its done.

So, no Kempton for me I'm afraid !

John, I've put my Black Rap story in the 'other classics' section...

Once again, I digress from the purity of 'Engine' build prep, but I would appreciate your learned opinions on a matter of vital importance. Despite liking the JPS paintwork for longer than I can remember, my own steed is currently blue. I've just had it touched up and lacquered over and it looks really nice. But sat in the workshop all new and shinny, it looks very bling, I'm beginning to think I should just paint it black (as Sir Mick said).
What do you learned gentlemen say; Too bling? Paint it black?...:

Leave the blue and do a reverse JPN. Red and white stripes. Any color but black. :)

I remember and save about everything rider experimenter Ken Canaga leaves us, so wondering if anyone would reference his preference for heavy side flywheels. THE Gravel can teach about why slipper clutch work better to get a corner cripple down slow enough in time to handle peal loads in turns. Peel would be fairly straight forward to set up air shifter but only 4 wide gears so may not have to shift enough up dn to matter. One thing I've learned is if some style, set up or device helps the modems in road racing to get around faster > going w/o it or doing the opposite works out best on Peel and hopefully a lighter flywheel too. To be mean corner cripples run into traction limits, shift gears while a neutral cycle just shifts styles.

I've thought about a slipper clutch a few times. The way I ride, I depend on engine braking to be there reliably, exactly when I need it. If I have to touch the brakes to lose speed when putting work in on another competitor, it is always a worry. A commando based bike never handles like a two stroke.

One thing THE Gravel literally impressed on me was not to expect full traction accelerating or braking if not about full upright. So anyone shifting or braking while leaned needs all the traction aids possible and better lighten up their loads compared to about full up right. So staying about full upright into turns and getting about full upright mid turns then about full upright out of turns pays back with faster power planted fun. To leave phase two counter steering I have to take Peel straight into apex toss over and nail power to resist hi side then cut power to get the hi side like pop up save, so power cut abruptness is more important on Peel than power up response. Thought of slipper clutch don't occur on a neutral handling cycle. To rub forum rawer I divide tire wear into 3 types, Melted, Abraided and Smeared out. Guess which I found on racers and instructors vs my lack of slipper clutch need. Best wishes new engine excites snot out of poor rear patch.

My sentiments exactly...

Black is boring. I know, cuz both my mk3 and current mk2 are black. If I turn my mk2 Interstate onto a Roadster, it would either be Candy Apple or a metal flake.

Here I am riding a black bike; I DIG ON THAT BLUE! Please don't kill it!
btw, who's rear shocks did you go with, and how well do they work with the chain guard?

Don't panic Nathan... I'll be leaving the blue... for now at least!

Shocks are by Falcon in the UK. Popular with classic racers etc. Top quality jobs I must say. They would clash slightly with the chain guard if the adjusters are wound close to minimum, but where I have them set, with the springs above the chain guard, there is bags of clearance.

So far I'm very impressed with them, very light, very well made, and unbelievably fast service. But... all I've done so far is look at them...!

I know I've covered the alternator fitting in another post, but still, there has been progress in the shed, so I thought I'd update y'all.

Alternator rotor and stator were to far outboard, I've now got it all tucked inboard as far as possible, this should reduce stresses on the crank, in theory at least. Here it is all done:

With the clutch, being new to Norton's I was expecting a lot of aggro and faffing around. But I bought a complete Barnet clutch pack, plain plates and alloy / fibre friction plates from Matt at CNW and assembled it. I've not ridden it yet, so it might slip like a bugger for all I know, but the clutch action feels great, a thousand times better than it was, here's the clutch assembled:

Although the wheels have still got to go back to CWC (the front needs moving over 4mm and the rear tire goes flat in a week) at least it's starting to look like a motorbike again doncha think?

I think the crank drive "over hanging" a bit is the least of your worries..its that bending up and down thats the issue. mayby a external fly wheel?

Re: Engine build prep... It's a runner !!!

Well boys, at last, its a runner. Haven't ridden it yet, will have to do the first head torque before that.

Feels very crisp and very smooth so far. Carbs need a bit of fiddling, seems too rich at idle. Look forward to riding the bloody thing.

I only took it off the road for 'a quick tidy up' ... that was 9 months ago ... I've got the self control of a drug addict ... !!

Here's what it looks like:
