Eddie, regards the composite gasket- my Commando came with a leaking copper headgasket. I installed a new copper gas which held for a couple of weeks then started leaking. Annealed and re-installed, same problem. Tried another new copper gasket, no luck. Finally I fitted a flame ring composite gasket, problem solved so far, (5,000 miles)

Glen
That's reassuring, thanks Glen.

Nigel, it looks like it'll be the dogs *ollocks, but I think you should've got a Fullauto head as well just to finish it off properly

I look forward to seeing it finished.

Ha! You're a bad un you are Reggie!

I actually put a lot of thought into that, but given that I have a very good RH10 head as a base, I've stuck with it. The plan is still to send the head to Jim Comstock for the full Monty porting treatment this winter though!

That is unless Fullauto make progress with their big bore alloy barrels... That may require an amendment of the plan...

I knew you would have as I have too. I'm just quite jealous that there is sooooo much good stuff on yer bike.

Nice to see you are using the "big pin" cam chain.

They work well so I just dont understand wht the "big pin" duplex to replace the
mostly crap triplex on the market today, isnt more widely used.

Just a word of warning, deapite what you might have seen on the interweb
Elite chain is Chinese. It doesnt mean it is is crap.

I can't claim the credit for choosing a good camchain Andy, it was all part of a kit, including the auto tensioner, supplied by Jim Comstock (Comnoz on here).
Will be emailing you soon tho ref the rear chain.

Got to agree, it's looking great mate .
Probably have to use 5th gear to get past you now

You'll need more than a 5th gear to get past 'The Trident Hunter' Sammy boy...

Right , seeing as you are forcing the issue I'll have the motor running aswell as using 5th

Hi Eddie

The build is looking great & I think it is really moving along quickly :D
Where did you get your crankcase nuts from?
Hopefully I will catch up with you later in the season.

Ayup Chris, the crank case fixings, and cylinder head fixings, and barrel base fixings are all by ARP, from Matt at CNW. They are beautiful !!

Nige, thats a super rebuild, can i be a bit picky and say.... I would have opened up the oil feed hole above the timing side cam bush/feed with a 8mm counter sinker...it would collect more oil splash and direct more oil into the bush...just a little detail, and would proberly make chuff all differance..or would it?
Any way..fantastic job and keep them picky's comming...if you are off to Silverstone this week end...take a brolly!

A bit late with the advice there John!

I can see you logic, although I don't think I'll lose any sleep having not done it this time. I'm pretty sure my bushes have done something over 20k miles and they were perfect. Nevertheless, I can't think of a downside to your suggestion, so its something to do on the next rebuild I guess.

Nigel , I did say i was going to be picky, and you are wise not to loose sleep over it..20000 mile and without a problem suggests all is well with the stock hole..its just in my two stroke past i made all the holes bigger..with the view when it comes to gathering splash oil/mist ..a nice BIG counter sink is going to collect more...lots more!

Sorry boys, but I've not made much progress this week as I spent some time getting my other main bike roadworthy. Nevertheless, I thought I'd finally get the gearbox second adjuster swapped over cos y'all moaned at me saying I'd put it on the wrong way around! So, just to appease you, here it is freshly turned around:

Engine build prep (2014)

Although I really do want to do a JPS paint job on this bike at some stage, I decided not to at present because I've got rather enough on at present. But I did find a good bike painter who touched up and lacquered over the existing paint, its come up very nicely too, so much so in fact, that JPS paint job may have to wait even longer now:

I'll put the painters details in a separate post for those who might be interested, I admit, the blue is growing on me again:

I promise I'll try and make more serious progress next week gentlemen. Just as soon as I've made a decision re the Maney outrigger!!

Nigel, that sneeky Shadow shot ! wow that looks more interesting ...better not go there!

It's not quite a Shadow in the shadows John, its my black Rapide. Quite an interesting bike actually, I'll dig out some pics and post in the 'other classic bikes' bit, hopefully tomorrow.

Yes please, so its a Black Rap..with two front heads...Have you seen Godots 500 racer ? very nice.

Yes it has two front heads too, you're a bit of a 'spotter' I see! I'll put the full SP in the thread when I start it.

I've seen pics of Godet's 500 and and had some chats with him about it. i even toyed with the idea of having one and racing it. It looks bloody fabulous, do you know what's gone on inside the engine cases? Awesome! I was fortunate enough to own a 1330 Godet Egli, fabulous bike, but I sold it to raise cash when buying a house. Ah well!
