Just curious what happens to cast iron barrels in a dishwasher. I have a dishwasher in my shop just for parts. I never have put cast iron barrels in there but what's the worry, rust? I put oily parts, nuts and bolts, grimmy tools, set it on pots and pans and it works well. No aluminium parts as they turn dull, but I may try and find non phosphate soap and give it a test. Found the dishwasher in a thrift store, "No way to test- $25". Couldn't pass it up as it looked unused.

Rust! Lots of it, on every conceivable service and in every conceivable nook and cranny.

Leaving the parts needing serious work, ideally blasting, thus completely negating the objective of the exercise.

I know... I am that idiot...

If the right soap is used rust is not an issue. I have a jet wash cabanet made for this along with the right soap

The right soap [Simple Green works] plus avoid the heated drying cycle in the dishwasher. Get it out as soon as the washing is done and dry it with an air gun.

It's the heat and humidity during the drying cycle that causes the rust.
