Aren't dishwashers a wonderful thing for Norton commando parts!!
This covering is Aluminium Phosphate, it comes from the phosphates in the dishwasher detergent. So look out for phosphate free dishwasher detergent or use a no foam phosphate free detergent. Whatever you do do not use Fairy Liquid or other hand washing liquids as your dishwasher will turn into a foaming monster.I wouldn't even consider it. My dishwasher ruined the aluminum parts of my meat grinder - it left a nasty grey film that took hours to polish off.
Vapor blasting does the same thing in one step. Here is a freshly washed combat head. The head was first bead blasted, washed with soapy water multiple times, and then sent through the regular cycle with Cascade action pak detergent pods.
It did darken slightly, but not enough to lose any sleep over.
