After many hours spent tracking down an ignition problem (faulty EI replaced with another brand), I was ready for an early spring shakedown cruise.
During the winter I had also done a number of upgrades and seal replacements to cure some nagging oil and tranny leaks.
CNW renewed the seals in my outer transmission cover, so that had be re-assembled and installed. Matt removed the cover parts and placed in a baggie. So I puzzled out the proper outer cover part order, installed the cover, and it shifted fine during short test runs. A longer ride left me stuck in second gear and no ability to change, so I limped back home feeling lucky it was not stuck in fourth.
Removing the cover I noticed the pawl spring was not in the stop plate groves but had moved 'down'. Hmmm. Turns out I installed the pawl spring upside down. To me, it was NOT obvious which way is correct or how critical it is, but now I see it has been covered here before. Instructions and pictures often mention the clearance around the pawl and proper bending in the 'X' plane. But I never held the spring and looked at the very important 'Y' plane bend.
I never saw pics here or on the OB site, so here is my small contribution to minimizing one frustration within this very helpful community.
