cylinder bore

There is no liner. The nikasil surface is electroplated on the original cylinder bore.
The only downside I am aware of is it expensive. But you will never need another rebore.
 
Personally I like the nikasil lining idea. Lots of guys in vintage racing are using al bores with nicasil type liners. Does anyone know of a drawback to this approach? Does the used bore create liner failure concerns?
I spoke to the company who used to do it in the midwest (can't remember the name off hand), and the guy on the phone said that it only sticks to cast iron bores about 50% of the time, and they can't predict when it will and when it will not. There is no warranty for the work, but he was very honest about it all. He said it mostly works for the guys who like to talk about all the hot rod upgrades they did to their motor.
 
I just came back from my local harely maching shop to show him my .020 over 1970 commando barrels. One cylinder is in good condition, the other has heavy deep pitting about an inch down. he thinks after going to .040 some the pitting will still be there. He says I could just try it and see what happens. He calls me a doctor because I want perfect bores. Getting a replacement will not be easy because all the ones on ebay look hammerd . Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.
I would try .040. Unless you intend to seek WOT and extreme rims, this should work well. I don't think us Norton guys hammer on them after investing$$$. These bikes we cherish and keep garage and run will live on. OR find another stock bore cylinder. Then these new bore and .020. BTW, I think. 060 pistons for 750s were available.....

Can Nikasil be used or scored/pitted bores? I would think it needs to be used on fresh bores since other types of electroplating won't fill bad spots.

The reason why I was inquiring to Boretech (I remembered!) was I have a cylinder that was overbored by .004". As in, .004" beyond the .004" piston clearance. Must have been an expensive mistake for someone. Boretech said they could plate to whatever thickness you reasonably wanted, but couldn't guarantee the adhesion. If Nicasil plating is like any other industrial plating I've come across, it needs final finishing after plating, so it would probably fill small voids as it's cut back to final dimensions. For the price they wanted, you could get a couple brand new cylinders from Andover with guaranteed basic function, but that service is no longer available. Seemed like a good option for bikes that have no other option, but that's thankfully not the case with our bikes.
 
What do you mean by WOT and extream rims. The machinist did a bore measurment and we think a few pits may not disappear but may not be detramental to operation. But this nickasill is got me thinking.

Exactly. I had cast-iron lined two-stroke jugs plated from Millennium Technologies, three different times they failed. Cost me a bundle, a beautiful set of ported cylinders, were destroyed the third time they tried to plate them.
Instead of a disclaimer or warning in advance, when I asked about the viability of plating, a cast-iron line bore they assured me "oh yeah, no problem "

Never again.

Wide Open Throttle and extreme rides...basically if you were going to ride it as a survivor that you put blood, sweat, and tears into (and couple of VISA cards, and overtime). Or you were going to race it.....on or off track. I'm almost 70 and got away with a bunch stuff....I own 7 bikes, 3 commandos that I ride fast sometimes, but try not to abuse them. When tempted to see the tach spin up, it should have $$ @ anything over 6500 IMHO. top end is $1000 easily these days.
