If she is a 750, check the rear crankcase breather, 850's breath through the back of the timing case, and are usually happy in this area! As an aside, I run a XS650 Yamaha reed breather in the line from engine to tank.
Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm rebuilding my early 750 with mods to allow timing case breathing, and I'd like to try the XS650 reed breather.
My question is simply, what's the availability of these breathers in the Sydney area? I'm in Penrith. I haven't done much looking yet, just being lazy.
Cheers

Check your feed and return lines are correct. Someone here recently blew the engine with them reversed and 'water in oil'. I'd get it sorted before redline or too many miles.

Dave

That'd be me. Piston, rod, cam, bearings. A Norton doesn't survive long without oil.

Ouch. I too had a recent lucky escape. Cam bush primary side seized to cam and was spinning unnoticed in the cases. Also bores had signs of glazing. I had a leaking head gasket and didn't have time to sort it do put it in the shop. On thing led to another but in short, was less than 1000miles off total implosion.

Hi Dkt26

I'm in Brighton N'side of Brissy if you like me to come over and have a look over your bike, with 36 years experance with my 850 should be able to work something out I have rebuild my Norton 3 times now, the first time with no experance with engine rebuilds the 3 rd time was to replace the crank cases, I have all the tools that is needed, as for the rebuilder to tell you not to hotrod the motor??? you don't need to do muck work to make your Norton perform better and still remain reliable, the best thing I ever done to my motor was the get the crank balanced, SS Cam grind and the head ported for better fuel/air flow and still run the flat top pistons (but 40thu over) and I did this 32 years ago now with over 120,000 miles so I must have done something right.

So PM me if you like me to have a look or if you like to come to my place, I have a very big shed up the back with a good work benches and have evry tool needed for Norton motor.

Ashley

PS I always try to help my fellow British bike lovers
