Hello all

I have a center stand that I cannot imagine I will ever use. Will it fit a '72 750 Commando? My bike is the '74 850 model.

Thanks for the help.

850 stands are different. You can put later stands on earlier bikes (assuming the earlier bike has a cradle mount) but you need the later bushings and may need to drill out the cradle holes.

I don't think you can use earlier stands on later bikes.

Why won't you use it? Extra?

If it's a '72 stand, I wouldn't use it either! The 850 stands are significantly stronger, although that isn't really saying alot. '71-'73 750 stands will break at the crossmember. Never kickstart the bike on the stand if you are using these. The 850 stand will bolt on if you use the 850 spacers or make a set that fit the holes properly.

Before mounting either of these stands check the spring mounting hole carefully. These tend to crack and result in failure of the cross piece. It is a good idea to weld a washer or other reinforcement here before you paint the stand and mount it.

This failure can cause much aggravation. The last one I had fail let the stand drop and bounce off the pavement at speed then smacked the chain and broke the chain clip, which let the chain fly off and broke the guard off the inside of the primary case!!!

My '74 850 came with a perfectly functioning side stand already fitted and a center stand in a bag along with some other goodies. I just noticed that someone in the area was advertising on craigslist that he needs a Norton center stand for his "72 Commando, so I thought I'd let him have mine if it fit.

Thanks for the replies.

So I have a 72 and a later 850 centerstand. I had to get the later bushings. I need to drill out the cradle but unfortunately the frame is in the way. I'm going to have to figure a way to move the cradle (this may entail removing some of the engine bolts and jacking the cradle up). So if this guy gets it, there will be some work. I can post some pics if you want.

A kit to fit the 850 stand to '71-on Commandos was available from early 1973, supplied under part number 064874 according to a Norton service release (N3/39).

The 064874 kit contained:

Stand 064301
Spring 064643
Spacer (2) 064873
Bolt (2) 062040
"2" parts - number unknown (nuts for the bolts-maybe)?
Washer (4) The part number of which has been over-typed with another number (maybe the bolt number) so is illegible?

So the conversion kit apparently uses two 064873 spacers instead of two 064057 850 "pivot bush"?
The service release does not mention anything about needing to drill the cradle?
The 064873 spacer is still available from AN, and it's dimensions are given, so maybe fitting two spacers that size would save you having to drill the cradle?

Here you can see how the frame is in the way. The upper hole is for the spring.

You can see here how the mount hole isn't exactly round any more, one of the reasons I want to redrill it.

center stand model fitment

Here you can see the 850 bushing and bolt.

And the stepped bushing by itself.

I'd much rather have the bolt riding in the bushing than the cradle (and from the wear in the cradle hole you can see why the factory went to the 850 style bushing.

I need an early centerstand to experiment with on making it
longer for taller Ms Peel and to also clear the vital rump rod.
Any available for mostly the shipping?

Ron, I've had Combat center stand break crossing THE Gravel
but caught it before other damage and while scratching butt
to figure out how to travel on, a farmer pulled up to check on
me with bailing twine handy to tire up and ride on.

BTW surprised I could feel the slight improvement in handling
and response by the loss to ~8 lb of center stand.
Its what started me on slightly anal hobby adding lightness to Ms Peel.

Rear iso can be removed and cradle jacked up to clear
a drill bit which fortunately don't have to be prefect,
just accept the stepped bush ok.

The Commando I rode and crashed yesterday only had a
center stand as side stand bush got to crapped out to use
I guess.

Does anyone know where to get the conversion bushings? Part number 064873? Old Britts has the entire kit included on their website, but is it possible to buy the hardware without the actual stand? Thanks?

British Bike Connection (Jim Noll - in Rochester NY) had them in stock when I did mine.

Or direct from Andover Norton.

I ran into this problem when I put an 850 stand on my 72.
I also didn't want to pull the bike half apart so I could get a drill in to enlarge the holes in the cradle.
Instead I cut off the smaller diameter portion of the bush and mounted it without enlarging the holes.
Even if over time the hole gets larger the solution would be to drill it out then you can mount the standard bush.
I've put almost 6,000 miles on the bike since I did this and usually use the center stand and haven't noticed any issues with it.
