and I run both nuts on the inside of the cradle (nylock

Doesn't the spring hang up on the nut? That is why the manual shows the bolts inserted from the inside.

SwooshDave,
On your side stand issue. I see that according to Fred Eaton (OldBritts) the Mk3 sidestand takes a bush with an OD of 0.687" (P/N 065491) while the pre-'75 takes a bush with an OD of 0.625" (P/N 062871). That could explain the sloppiness!

Since I always conned a buddy with a lathe to make these spacers, I never realized the MK3 sidestand was different! I can't imagine why they would change!

Well, considering how think the walls on the bushings are there isn't much material to handle the wear. That would be my guess.

Bushings/spacers are going back to Old Britts for the later ones.

On the center stand I have, the spring hooks to the cradle just over the left bolt, and hooks in the center stand cross tube right near the right side, 1/2" from the upright, so the spring is at almost a 45 degree angle, making clearance no problem. The center stand that broke had the mount hole closer to the center of the cross tube, 1- 1/8" from the right upright, and clearance was a problem, especially with the old spring (the new part has a different top bend, making clearance even less of an issue)

Hi all
Just got around to sorting out my centre stand issues (both wheels on the ground). It had odd size bolts & worn bushes, but I don't think it amounted to much more than 1/4". I think the main problem is to do with the stops on the stand allowing the bike to go too far back (or the stand to go too far forward). I seem to remember my last commando, a 73 850, which I sold in about 1978! was very easy to "rock" off the stand whilst sitting on it, I'm sure it had best part of an inch clear under the rear wheel. looking at the pronounced forward angle of the stand on mine I'm sure this is the issue, & could well be on others.
