BSA 441 timing/ tuning for better "umph"

I have a 68 Shooting Star that I hadn't tuned up in a long time but was really running strong with great acceleration & strong pull but did ping a bit Leading me to think the timing was to far advanced so I did a tune up including valve, points & timing. The points were way out at 0.25 so I reset them to spec at 0.15 when I checked the timing with the timing light it was right on the spec at 28' BTDC. It still starts easy & the pinging is gone but a lot of the pep in acceleration is gone. Closing the points retards the timing so it must have been around 31' BTDC before. My question is are there safe alterations to the factory settings that will give a bit more pep without pinging ? What combination would be good?

Electronic ignition? It did it for me sometime ago on a b50mx and actually on my b25 (with limited umph I must admit!!!)

Hi Phillipe,

I love the BSA unit singles. I think possibly your Auto Advance Unit is not fully opening? Certainly the choice of petrol needs to be considered too. Try also an octane booster additive if superior petrol is not available. If you can up the RON of the fuel, you may have some better results with a few degrees of advance, but at the expense of harder starting. Also see that there is a web site called B50.org I think?

Well a bit of carb adjusting & all seems good. I allways use premium gas allthough that is only 91 octane. The only thing I don't like is that it seems harder to start now. I used to be able to start it 1st or 2nd kick. Now it can take a bit more but it's ok. I think I may open the points gap a couple degrees & see but really all seems good now after a good 60 mile ride. It had sat for a few months, maybe it just needed a good ride to clean things up.

I have twin plugged my B44, ported head on inlet to 32mm, fitted 32mm carb, B50 MX cam plus Boyer micro digital ignition. I have gearing of 19/47 on the back and it still lifts the front wheel in 2nd, still pinks a bit between 2.5K and 3K revs but a lot less now it has a 320 main jet fitted but will drop this to 300 next as it 8 strokes above 5.5K revs. I can only get 95RON petrol locally but I an sure it would like 97 or 99 if I could get it. To get it really going on the MX cam the silencer needs to have as little back pressure as poss, currently it has the upswept exhaust with the peanut silencer, if I add a mute it won't rev whatever the jetting.
