I have the noise control mufflers with the factory black on them. Will this finish come off if I use a buffer on them?

I assume no one knows the answer, me either so you may be the first to try it and let us know. Might try a spot that's hard to see unless bent on knees to see.
I would think a fine polish paste and soft buffer wheel would make black and shiney before rubbing through. Take before and after shots please.

I assume you're talking about the original mufflers that came on your '74 JPN. I used Autosol on my JPN with no ill effect. The finish is "black chrome". Not sure why you want to use a buffer for such a small and non flat area.

Because it's fast and effective. I used some white rouge, and the black chrome shined up like new. Unfortunately, there are some areas that were rubbed down to the base metal from loose pipes rattling against the fairing stays. Oh well, at least the parts that are visible with the fairing installed will look good.

Hi Stu,

Keep in mind during the chrome plating operation the last layer is the chrome and it isn't polished after application. All the smoothness is accomplished in the base metal and nickel and copper layers under the chrome. I wouldn't get too aggressive with abrassives on the chrome surface...just remove the grime.
