Cold start- fuel on, tickle, key on, roll it up, push it down swiftly(1-3). Warm- fuel on, maybe quick tickle, key on, roll it up, push it down(mostly 1). Throttle just slightly cracked on both. Never have had to use choke. Baby make big boom boom go fast… If I ask nicely.

Mine does that now, too. After I push what used to be the "spare" button on the handlebars.

I realize my post was a bit metaphysical, but this actually happened. The engine must have stopped rotating at TDC, probably a few degrees after TDC with a full charge of mixture. When I turned the key it must have caused a condenser to dump it's charge into one of the coils primary circuits producing a spark. This happened only one other time I can remember when my mother's '62 Ford station wagon did the same thing; hasn't happened again.

More to the point: I have watched countless kick starting events and have noticed that riders who approach the task with the attitude that the machine will be difficult to start usually prove themselves right. Riders that know the motorcycle will start are on their way in one or two kicks; attitude is, generally, the only difference.

Competitive athletes train for their events by setting goals in excess of the event(s) they will be entering. If you want to impress your Norton and overwhelm it with pre-start attitude learn how to start a big bore, high compression British single...

Never understood the “push it past TDC” method. I want it brought up onto compression, then reset the ratchet pawl - which allows a moment for pressure to dissipate - and then come down hard on those last few degrees of compression. This allows for a much higher cranking speed, and more crank inertia. Same goes for big singles.

This is almost identical to the method I use now.
I have been considering E-start but before sharing this with you know who and putting yet more cash into it I thought it prudent to "ask around"...so far Road Scholar seems to have it knocked...too bad its so hard to repeat.

On a cold engine or one I haven't rode for a while, Main petcock on, choke on, I tickle the Amals, Kick it through once without the ignition on. Bring back up to compression, turn on ignition then repeat the kick through and it starts right up with no issues. Works for me.
Cheers,

Similar method to mine.
My MK3 has a functioning E-Starter, but when trying to impress the public I will kick start.

Petcock on
Ignition off
Choke off - have the lever locked in position to prevent vibes from accidentally "activating" choke while riding.
Tickle Amals
Kick through twice
Tickle carbs again
Bring motor up to compression
Ignition on
Kick to start.

Usually produces good results.

The gods really prefer the sacrificial lambs to not be on grass before the knife. Only milk fed...something about purity. This works best with excellent long term benefits. Every spring and good all year....helps prevent oil leaks & excess vibration also.... Can't stop BS though.
