When i read the "genuine Norton Comments" let me say without any fear of being kicked in the Nads.
Firstly The chances of being sold by a current vender a genuine Norton part are far,far remote.
When our venders claim "Genuine " it's just rubbish!
If anyone today believes that the part in a bag that is listed " Genuine Norton " then the buyer must be simple.
Fact is , when Norton Commandos where built the guys who put them together where Fitters , they had file's ,emery cloth , hammers etc..
Because the parts had to be made to fit, a few years ago i had to file a bigend shell, because it was tight! [yes i can see the nod's!]
Saying todays parts are made on original tooling cause's a cold chill down my spine :!: Local black country supplier's had ward, copy lathes. to day no self respectiong production producer use's manual machines...they still do in India! ..but not here. 5 axis C.N.C with spindle speeds of 5000 rpm even more!
Honda used assembliers , Norton had fitters..thats why they can produce 10 times the volume .
The new bloor triumph bikes are made in the same way as Honda, Kawasaki ,Yamaha etc......so remember Old Commando's fitted together by cloth capped,pipe smokers, with a pair of feeler gauges in his top pocket, and a nice toolbox of files . Honda Assembled by girls with Robbie Williams on their I pad's :lol:
 
There was no Marshall Plan to rebuild British industry after WW2, and Lend Lease money was not allowed to be used to prepare for peace, as in Russia, Which country builds the McLaren F1 Racing car ?
 
The assembly methods were much more craft than robotic repetition. Probably why there doesn't seem to be 2 bolts or screws the same size
 
Besides the big picture insights outside of the famous bad management that Alan revealed, if ya look into the Commando era of factory workers, it'd be more accurate to label them saboteurs than fitters or assemblers.
 
And the Honda customers were consumers and the Norton customers suckers.

Big end shells wouldn't have been produced by Norton,your comment also goes to show good machinists don't make good engine rebuilders.

Thankyou very much for this. Like most others I have thought for years (without checking) that most or all of the Marshall plan funds went to the losers of WW2.

But a bit of checking reveals I was totally wrong.

By far the greatest amount went to the UK. 26 % of the total and more than both Italy and West Germany combined.

In early 1950s US$ terms.

US$ 3,297 mm to the UK

US$ 2,296 mm to France

US$ 1,448 mm to West Germany

US$ 1,204 mm to Italy

US$ 1,128 to the Netherlands

What the **** did all those Brits do with that money if it didnt go into machine tools. Puts the West Germany UK engineering quality arguement into a completely different place in my mind. Especially since their factories were completely destroyed

Excellent post - and depressingly true!

Most if not all the machines I worked on in the '80s truck industry dated back to war production times (I worked in a former tank factory which is now a branch of Argos!)
We were lucky to knock out a production sample before the 50th attempt out of a batch of 120, so on a good day most of the production was more-or-less to the drawing, but only by a few percent.

I heard a Dutch comedian (can't remember the name) get a huge laugh from the statement 'you Brits are great - you still think you're a global superpower!'

I believe New Zealand has a similar climate to the UK..... any room for another Engineer? Can I bring my Audi car with me?

And we are still trying to solve the world's terrorist problems on a reducing shoestring military budget in a continued and desperate attempt to keep the USA government happy. How much does or has Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc contribute(d) towards combatting the 'Terrorist' threat in Europe. I know they have all had their attacks and defence programs exist but I don't see any evidence of the same level of £'s the UK has shelled out in Iraq and Afghanistan. When will our governments, both middle and middle and middle wing (all the same really) accept we cannot afford to maintain this position? Maybe someone can find out in real terms how much the other major Europeans spend on this.
 
The key point form LAB's reference is the City of London bank being too big to let fail...
Overriding needs

If ya go back a bit, mid 1930's, before the public officialdoom fool system picks up the WWII story - you will find that Germany was working on ways to trade its products for other countries products so could by pass the middle men of the London and NY banksters usury fractional reserve system. Official story line picks up with a certain cultural group advertising in major world wide media they had control of to boycott Germany, leaving impression the German Govt had picked on this certain cultural group first but it was the other way around. Its taboo to point this out more directly, so you are on your own of which color pill to swallow to understand world affairs better.
 
USA cannot afford it either. We are in hock. Nobody really wants to deal with this. Both
side of the political divide. Politically, things get dealt with only when there is no other
choice, or they never get dealt with and the ship sinks. We blame politicians but
they are elected by us and a reflection of ourselves.
Human nature . We hate facing reality.
Rather like the british motorcycle industry was, eh?

Good point's, and your question "where did all the money go?" well proberly the same place as all the govement sell off's...Millions from British utilities. all this mega money, inc our gold reserve's just went up in smoke... I would like to see how many companies have finnished trading in the last 10 years. and mark my words Germany is next, Just heard that a major brick making machinery manufactor in Germany Hans Lingl] have started lay off's..170 men went last week...now thats a start.

How do i know..i work for them.

I'll take rule by popular vote over a dictatorship, but nobody will vote for a politician who delivers bad news. Just suppose your kids could elect new parents if they didn't like the rules imposed regarding bedtime, diet, or acceptable activities? Too big to fail? Remember, democracy is an experiment that is ongoing.
 
Well some of you may know, that I've just returned from Afghanistan where I was working for a private company contracting with the Army to assist in performing maintenance on their helicopters. When I got there in Sept. '12 there was lots of food that was provided for carry out of the dining facility after you'd eaten your hot meal. Packages of beef jerky, packages of cookies, chewing gum, packages of muffins and potato chips etc... When I left this month to come back and help care for my elderly mother, all of the pre-packaged "goodies " were finished, and the flight line dining facility (where I mostly got my meals) were looking into providing MRE's for Mid-rats instead of hot meals and there was some talk of trying to save money closing it altogether and bussing us to another side of the base to eat. Soooo....the money is getting thin....but everybody probably knew that ,,,,I'm just say'n :)
